Description

The Tyrolia PROTECTOR+ Freeflex 14 GW is a race-category ski binding, new for 26/27, that puts a Full Heel Release heel on a Freeflex Pro chassis with an adjustment range of 4-14.

The release story. PROTECTOR is Tyrolia's name for the release technology. The heel here delivers 180° release both horizontally and vertically, and Tyrolia's stated figure — the FHR function can reduce ACL strain by more than 50% — carries its own footnote: finite element model simulations by the University of Innsbruck, not field injury data. It is a simulation number; no binding prevents injury. At the front, the VX BTR toe pairs Full Diagonal release with a GripWalk AFS anti-friction slider.

The chassis. Freeflex is the FF in the name: the heel moves back as the ski flexes, minimizing — in Tyrolia's words — the binding's influence on the natural ski flex. Stand height is 22.5 mm, weight is 1365 g per binding, and the box carries an 85 mm brake, the only published brake width. One 26/27 configuration: Matte Black / Speed Blue.

Boot compatibility. Tyrolia's Technologies tab covers Alpine ski boots (ISO 5355 Type A) plus GripWalk ski boots (ISO 23223 Type A), and its Boot Standard attribute adds that switching needs no sole-height adjustment. Soles outside those two adult norms are not on the official list, and we do not extend it.

Who it is for. Tyrolia files this binding under Race terrain with an Expert skill level — skiers who need maximum retention and stability at speed on steep terrain. Skip it if a technician would set your release value outside 4-14; the FF ST 16 GW one rung up runs 5-16 and gets the line-topping Stream toe plus Adaptive Suspension.

What we do. Tyrolia's disclaimer allows use only after mounting, adjustment and service by an authorised sports retailer or technician — and that is how we sell it. Our technician mounts the binding, checks your boot sole against the two ISO norms, and sets your release value in the shop. We publish no DIN settings, here or anywhere.

Tyrolia's 26/27 pitch is the release story: the official page says this binding 'now brings the trusted Full Heel Release technology also to the racing segment' — a heel releasing 180° both horizontally and vertically. Read the ACL number the way Tyrolia's own footnote does: a reduction of more than 50% in finite element simulations at the University of Innsbruck — not a field injury statistic.

The performance claims here are Tyrolia's own — including the relayed line that the heel is 30% easier to step into, which that preview's author would only back as 'noticeably easier'. Tyrolia publishes no brake width beyond the 85 mm in-box brake, and no elasticity or travel figures.

In the same line, the FF ST 16 GW runs 5-16 and adds the Stream toe with Adaptive Suspension; the Freeflex Demo 14 GW shares the 4-14 numbers without the PROTECTOR name. Sitting near the top of 4-14? Ask us about the ST 16 first.

Best For

Skiers Tyrolia itself files under Race terrain and an Expert skill level, on adult Alpine (ISO 5355 Type A) or adult GripWalk (ISO 23223 Type A) soles, whose technician-set release value lands inside 4-14.

Not For

Anyone whose technician-set value falls outside 4-14 — in the same line the FF ST 16 GW runs 5-16. Boot soles outside the two adult ISO norms Tyrolia names. Anyone planning to mount or adjust it themselves — Tyrolia allows use only after work by an authorised retailer or technician. And racers chasing the line-topping build: the Stream toe and Adaptive Suspension live on the ST 16, not here.

Common Questions

Which boots are compatible with the PROTECTOR+ Freeflex 14 GW?
Tyrolia's official statement, verbatim: 'Compatible with adult Alpine boots (ISO 5355 Type A) and adult Walk boots (ISO 23223 Type A). No sole height adjustment is needed.' Anything beyond those two adult norms sits outside the official statement, and we will not extend that list. Send us your boot model and we will check which norm its sole carries.
What is the difference between the PROTECTOR+ Freeflex 14 GW and the PROTECTOR+ FF ST 16 GW?
The range and the toe. This one runs 4-14 with the VX BTR toe; the ST 16 runs 5-16 and, per Tyrolia's own product copy, adds 'the innovative Stream toe and Adaptive Suspension technology'. Both are PROTECTOR+ models listed with an 85 mm brake in the box. When we checked, the ST 16 was not in the North American store catalog.
