The Burton Highshot Step On is a men's Step On® snowboard boot that closes with a single Sequence BOA® dial, carries a heat-moldable Imprint™ 2 liner and, in Burton's words, has a medium-stiff flex. It lists at US$349.95 for 26/27.
Step On drops the straps: two toe cleats at the forefoot and a heel cleat at the back click into a Step On® binding, and a clip on the back of the boot keeps your pant cuff clear of that cleat. On the shell, Sequence BOA® runs two lace paths off one dial, which Burton says snugs the boot evenly from top to bottom. Inside, the Imprint™ 2 liner adds 3M™ Thinsulate™ insulation and a hook-and-loop closure, while the Lock-Up Cuff wraps the laces around the ankle to hold the heel down. Underfoot, Burton pairs an EST®-optimized midsole with an outsole made with 20% recycled rubber content. Burton backs the boot with a one-year warranty.
Burton rates the Highshot Happy Medium on its three-step Personality scale, the setting it pitches at riders who like to ride a bit of everything, and gives no numeric flex rating. If you plan to keep your strap bindings, this is the wrong boot: Burton's instructions pair Step On boots exclusively with Step On bindings.
Burton makes the Highshot in Regular and Wide, sized US 6, then 7 through 12 in half sizes, then 13, 14 and 15. Of Burton's four men's Highshot Step On boots, the Highshot is the least expensive, at US$349.95, and the only one of them with just one dial. Burton's published spec list is unchanged from 25/26, which makes an independent review of last season's boot a fair guide to this one.
The 25/26 Highshot's independent tester, riding a US 10 on hard, partly icy groomers, found it mid-stiff and locked-in, best when carving at speed, with good heel hold and shock absorption. He also felt the tongue fold into the top of his foot when he flexed forward, rated board feel one of its weaker areas while noting that Step On makes boot and binding hard to separate, and missed being able to tighten the lower foot and the upper cuff separately.
The Highshot gives ground on adjustability and hardware. The Highshot Plus adds a second zone for US$100 more, along with an Imprint™ 3 liner and a Focus Cuff, and the Highshot X, at US$180 more, brings a Vibram® outsole and a separate dial for an internal ankle hammock, though Burton publishes no traction comparison. Either way, budget for bindings: Burton says Step On boots only work with Step On® bindings, so plan on a matching men's pair and try the Highshot's tongue on your own foot first.
