PTO Verdict
“Völkl made a Mantra for people who don't want a Mantra.”
Best for: Intermediate skiers who want Völkl quality without Mantra intensity. Lighter skiers. The all-day cruiser who values comfort over performance. A solid clearance buy.
Not for: Chargers, hardpack warriors, or expert skiers who need authority. For that, step up to the Mantra 88.

Description
The Blaze 86 W is Völkl's lightweight all-mountain ski built for women who move between groomers, variable terrain, and occasional off-piste without wanting a ski that fights them. There's no titanal here — Völkl replaced the metal with an extra fiberglass layer in the binding zone to keep the weight low and the feel responsive rather than dampened. The Multilayer Woodcore Light is milled out along the bottom to shed grams, and TPU suspension inserts in the tip and tail absorb chatter and vibration before it travels up your legs. The 3D Radius Sidecut runs three radii — roughly 22m tip, 12m underfoot, 20m tail — so turns can be opened up or tightened without committing to one fixed arc. Tip-and-tail rocker handles variable snow and float entry; camber underfoot keeps edge contact real on groomed runs. The 146–166cm range works for lighter frames and skiers who ski with quickness rather than force.
This is a ski for intermediate to advanced women who want something easy to live with across a full day of mixed resort terrain — soft groomers, cut-up off-piste, the odd mogul run. If you ski hard and fast on firm snow, or you need real edge lock on ice, this ski will disappoint you: no metal means the ski gets loose when you push it on hard pack, and it won't hold a carved turn the way a heavier ski does. Aggressive groomers and chargers should skip it. The step up within the Blaze family is the Blaze 94 W — wider for more flotation in soft snow, same light-no-metal character. This package includes the vMotion 11 TCX GW binding (DIN 3–11, GripWalk compatible), so it skis right out of the shop.

The take
“Völkl made a Mantra for people who don't want a Mantra.”
The Blaze 86 is Völkl's lighter, friendlier alternative to the Mantra line. Same 3D Radius Sidecut technology, but with a Hybrid Multilayer Woodcore instead of the heavy beech/poplar + titanal combo. The result: a ski that's noticeably easier to turn, less fatiguing, and more forgiving.
There's no titanal here. That's the trade-off. The Blaze uses Tailored Fibre Placement (carbon and fiberglass, strategically placed) instead of metal for reinforcement. It's lighter and livelier, but it doesn't have the dampening and edge hold that metal provides. On ice and hard-packed snow, the Mantra 88 is decisively better. On soft groomers and mixed conditions at moderate speed, the Blaze 86 is more enjoyable.
Five sizes from 152 to 180. The 152 and 159 are clearly targeted at women or smaller skiers. The 173 and 180 work for average-to-tall men.
This is a clearance item — great value for what you get. If you're looking for an easy, light groomer ski that has Völkl quality without Mantra demands, the Blaze 86 is a smart buy.
