The Burton Step On X Re:Flex is Burton's carbon-blend men's Step On binding, with a $479.95 MSRP. Nothing straps down: the toe cleats on a Step On boot clip into two hooks on the baseplate, the heel cleat locks into a heel clip, and a lever on the heel cup releases you.
New for 26/27 is Heel Grabber, a mechanism that Burton says engages as you step in and reduces heel-cup play when you go from heel to toe. The baseplate is listed as carbon-filled nylon, the hi-back as a 50:50 carbon fiber/nylon composite, and Burton describes the Re:Flex disc on this model as stiffer than on its other bindings. Forward lean is dialed rather than screwed. For mounting, Burton lists Re:Flex for 4x4, 2x4 and Channel boards; Burton's pre-2014 3D-pattern boards need a 3D Hinge Disc bought separately. Burton publishes no weight.
Burton pairs it with men's Step On boots only. It is the wrong binding for riders in regular strap boots, and because Burton sizes the Step On system by gender, it is not for women's Step On boots either. At $479.95, Burton's Step On X costs more than the other three men's Step On bindings in our 26/27 comparison set. The case for it is Burton's Stiff & Aggressive tier, the firmest of its three, plus the new Heel Grabber, for a Step On rider who prizes response over give.
An independent review of the 2021 construction, before Burton's 26/27 changes, called it super stiff and, for the tester's taste, too responsive. That is background, not a 26/27 result.
For less stiffness, the Step On Re:Flex ($279.95) is Burton's Happy Medium option. On a Channel board, the Step On Cartel X EST ($349.95) carries the same Stiff & Aggressive tier on EST mounting, which Burton says puts no hardware underfoot and improves board feel, though Burton lists no Heel Grabber for it.

Heel Grabber
New on the 26/27 spec sheet. Burton describes an automatic lock that engages when you step in, cuts heel-cup movement for a quicker, more direct toe-edge response, and lets go when you step out.
Step On connection
Burton's three-point connection: two toe hooks, one heel clip and a self-resetting release lever. Per Burton's manual, Step On bindings are not designed to release or to prevent injury.
50:50 carbon fiber/nylon hi-back
A hi-back of an even carbon fiber and nylon blend, which Burton calls hyper lightweight and responsive.
Re:Flex mounting
Burton's hinged disc system. Burton says the X runs a stiffer Re:Flex disc than its other bindings, without naming the disc. Its Step On manual lists 4x4, 3D and The Channel as compatible; Burton's old 3D-pattern boards need the 3D Hinge Disc, which is not included.
DialFLAD
A rotating dial sets forward lean, replacing the screws used through 25/26. Burton: more lean for a quicker response, less for a more relaxed one.
Gas Pedal
An adjustable toe ramp that Burton's manual says to match to your boot size before mounting, to cut toe drag and help the toe cleats engage.
