Description
ATK machines the HY out of 7075 aluminium — 22 structural parts per half pair — and lands at 675 g a binding. Going down, the boot sits flat on the ski: none of the toe-to-heel pin height difference of an ordinary tech setup. Going up there are three heel positions, one of them negative, dropping the heel 18 mm below the toe for long flat approaches and stiff freeride cuffs.

These are not boilerplate. ATK prints them on the cover of its own manual and in its intended-use section.
- No safety certification. ATK states that this binding model is not compliant with DIN/ISO or ASTM safety standards, nor with any other safety certification. The 4–11 on the scale is indicative; real release behaviour varies with the boot, the mount and wear.
- Rider limit 95 kg. Above that, ATK considers the binding to be used outside its limits.
- Adult, at least intermediate. ATK says plainly this is not a binding to learn to ski on.
- Ski mountaineering and freeride only. Any other use is improper per ATK.
- No controlled release in walk mode. The toe is locked going up — true of every pin binding.
Boots
This is a pin binding. ATK's own compatibility check requires tech inserts at both toe and heel, in good condition — a boot missing either is not compatible with any ATK binding. Past that it is model by model: ATK publishes a per-boot chart with a column for the HY, and the toe AFD has to be shimmed for your sole. ATK says only an ATK Specialized Technician can sign that off.

ATK machined a pin binding out of 7075 aluminium — 22 structural parts per half pair — and got it to 675 g a side. The trick that matters on the way down is that the boot sits flat on the ski in ski mode, without the toe-to-heel pin height difference you get on a normal tech setup. Going up you get three heel positions, and one of them is negative: the heel drops 18 mm below the toe, which is the one you want on long flat approaches and in freeride boots whose cuffs don't open far.
Read the release numbers for what they are. ATK says plainly, on the cover of its own manual and in four languages, that this binding is not compliant with DIN/ISO or ASTM and carries no other safety certification. The 4–11 on the scale is ATK's own indication, not a certified DIN setting, and ATK notes the real release behaviour varies with the boot, the mount and wear. ATK also limits the HY 11 Free to a rider of 95 kg or less, asks for an adult who understands the risks, wants at least an intermediate downhill level, and says outright that this is not a binding to learn on.
One more thing worth knowing before you tour on it: in walk mode the toe is locked, so the binding will not release in a fall. That is true of every pin binding, and it is the trade you accept for the way up.
None of that makes it a bad binding — it makes it a specific one. It is built for ski mountaineering and freeride, it wants a boot with tech inserts, and it wants to be mounted and set by someone certified to do it. Bring it in and we'll do that part.
Best For
Adult intermediate-and-up skiers at or under 95 kg who actually earn their turns and want one setup that tours properly and still skis like something you can push on.
Not For
Resort-only skiers — you would be paying for a walk mode you never use and giving up boot choice for nothing. Not for anyone whose boots have no tech inserts at toe and heel. Not for riders over 95 kg. Not for children: ATK specifies an adult user. And not for anyone still learning to ski down — ATK excludes that use itself.

- What is the difference between the ATK HY 11 Free and the HY 13 Free?
- Same chassis, different release-value range and different rider limit. The HY 11 Free is 4–11 and is rated to a 95 kg rider; the HY 13 Free is 6–13 and is rated to 110 kg. Both have to fit you on weight and on setting, so if your setting lands under 6 but you are over 95 kg, neither one is right — come talk to us.
- Is the ATK HY 11 Free DIN certified?

- Pick a brake equal to or slightly wider than your ski waist. We stock 97 mm and 108 mm. ATK also makes a 120 mm, which we can order.
- Does the ATK HY 11 Free release in walk mode?
- No. In uphill mode the toe arms are locked, so there is no controlled release in a fall — that is how every pin binding works. The brake is separate: you push the brake pedal down to lock it out of the way going up, and it comes back when you throw the heel lever to ski mode.
