Description
The Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk is an all-mountain alpine ski binding with a DIN 5-14 range, which Salomon rates for advanced skiers. It takes adult alpine (ISO 5355) and adult GripWalk (ISO 23223) boot soles, Salomon lists a 19.6 mm height and 980 g per binding, and the brakes come in 90, 100 and 115 mm, with a 130 mm brake also offered on the Black / Silver colorway.
The toe is where the design lives. Salomon's LDN toe pairs an extra-wide pedal (over 60 mm) with a 72 mm AFD pad, so the boot sits low and wide on the ski, and Salomon quotes 47 mm of elasticity, with elastic travel built into the toe wings to hold the boot through bigger shocks. The wings and toe height set themselves to an adult alpine or adult GripWalk sole, so moving between those two sole types needs no toe-height change, though a different boot still needs its sole length and release settings checked. Behind the boot is a three-part heel that Salomon describes as absorbing vibration while releasing smoothly; the metal-lever heel goes on the Strive 16 instead.
Skip it if you ski touring boots, pin-only boots or kids' soles, none of which are on its list. If your release value comes out under 5, the Strive 12 GripWalk (4-12) or Strive 10 GripWalk (3-10) starts lower. If you need more than 14, or want that metal heel, the Strive 16 MN is the step up. The Strive 14 Multinorm shares the 5-14 range and, on its salomon.com page, the same two adult soles, but that page does not list automatic toe adjustment.
We match the brake to your ski's waist, mount the binding, and set and test release values against your own boot. The DIN scale is a reference indicator, and it is not the same as a measured release torque, so the setting you ski on is a technician's call.

The Strive 14 GripWalk sits in the middle of Salomon's Strive line, and the choice around it comes down to the heel and the starting number. Against the Strive 12 GripWalk it reaches 14 instead of 12, starts at 5 instead of 4, and weighs 980 g per binding against 920 g. Both use a three-part heel, and Salomon sells the 12's lighter version on easy step-in.
The Strive 14 Multinorm is the comparison that catches people out. Both run 5-14 on the same toe and heel, and on Salomon's US pages both name the same pair of adult sole norms, alpine and GripWalk. The GripWalk version is the one whose page lists automatic wing and toe-height adjustment. Salomon's catalog also has it a touch lighter, 980 g per binding against the Multinorm's 995 g. For an alpine or GripWalk boot, the published difference that matters is that automatic toe-height adjustment.
Going up the line, the Strive 16 MN starts at 7 and runs to 16, and Salomon gives it a metal-lever heel positioned for a high level of hold and stability. Its catalog weight is 1125 g per binding. If your setting sits inside 5-14 and you do not need the metal heel, the 14 is the lighter of the two.
One shop reviewer who has skied the Strive 14 found it easy to step into, neutral and close to the snow, and felt it taking some of the sting out of ice and crud. The same reviewer gave the Marker Griffon a bit more precision and power transfer while finding the Strive smoother and quicker to respond, and gave the Look Pivot more elasticity in the heel. On that reviewer's comparison, the Griffon is the one to try if precision comes first, and the Strive if you would rather have the smoother, quicker feel.
Brake width is the other choice to make at purchase. All six catalog colorways come with 90, 100 and 115 mm brakes, and Black / Silver also offers a 130 mm brake, so if your ski needs a brake wider than 115 mm, that is the colorway to pick. Salomon publishes no brake-to-waist chart, so we choose the brake against your ski's waist when we mount it.
One habit worth keeping: the toe pedal is spring-centered, so with the boot out it should sit back in the middle. If it stays off-center, bring it in to the shop before you ski it.
Best For
Advanced resort skiers whose technician-set release value lands inside DIN 5-14, on adult alpine or adult GripWalk soles, who want a low toe platform and a ski waist that one of its brakes will clear (90, 100 or 115 mm, plus 130 mm on Black / Silver).
Not For
Touring or pin-only boots and kids' soles: Salomon lists adult alpine and adult GripWalk soles, with no touring norm. Skiers set below 5 (the Strive 12 GripWalk starts at 4 and the Strive 10 GripWalk at 3). Anyone needing more than 14 or wanting a metal-lever heel, which is the Strive 16 MN. And anyone planning to mount or adjust it at home.
Common Questions
- Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk vs Strive 14 Multinorm: what is the difference?
- The Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk and Strive 14 Multinorm share the DIN 5-14 range, LDN toe and three-part heel. Salomon's US pages list adult alpine and adult GripWalk soles for both, but automatic wing and toe-height adjustment appears only on the GripWalk page. By Salomon's catalog weights, the Multinorm is 995 g per binding against the GripWalk's 980 g.
- Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk vs Strive 12 GripWalk: which should I get?
- The Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk runs DIN 5-14 and weighs 980 g per binding; the Strive 12 GripWalk runs 4-12 at 920 g and uses a lighter three-part heel Salomon pitches on easy step-in. Salomon rates the 14 Advanced and the 12 Intermediate. Your technician-set release value decides which range fits you.
- What size Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk should I get?
- Salomon sizes the Strive 14 GripWalk by brake width: 90, 100 or 115 mm, plus a 130 mm brake for the Black / Silver colorway. The brake has to clear your ski's waist, so tell us your skis and we match it. Salomon does not publish the boot sole length range, so we check your boot at fitting.
- Is the Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk good for beginners?
- Salomon rates the Strive 14 GripWalk Advanced, and its scale starts at DIN 5. Salomon lists a skier body-mass band of 127.9-308.6 lb (58-140 kg), but weight alone does not set a release value. If your technician-set value falls below 5, compare it with the Strive 12's 4-12 range and the Strive 10's 3-10 range.
- Does the Salomon Strive 14 GripWalk work with touring boots?
- Salomon lists two sole norms for the Strive 14 GripWalk, Alpine - Adult (ISO 5355) and GripWalk - Adult (ISO 23223), so touring soles, pin-only boots and kids' soles are outside its listing. GripWalk's own guidance also says GripWalk bindings do not take touring boots. A technician confirms your exact boot at fitting.
