Stöckli's Montero AS is the short-turn end of the Montero all-mountain line: 76 mm underfoot, a 127-76-107 mm sidecut shared by all four lengths, and radii that run from 12.6 m in the 160 to 16.0 m in the 178. The character is built in at the ends. Inside the sandwich construction - a poplar and beech All Mountain Core under an aluminum layer - there is an S-shaped notch cut into the aluminum at the shovel and tail. Stöckli calls it Tip and Tail Flex, and it makes the shovel and tail softer in flex and torsion than the middle: that is the official mechanism behind the way this ski starts and finishes a turn - precise going in, controlled coming out, solid underfoot.
On firm snow the Montero AS skis the way that layup reads. A multi-tester review called it lively and stable at the same time, said it did not flinch on ice, and summed the feel up as silky smooth; a second test put the flex at neither too stiff nor too soft, with responses that come intuitively. One note on sourcing: 26/27 is a carryover season - the article number is unchanged - so those tests were run on the identical construction in earlier seasons.
The limits live in the same geometry. At 76 mm the Montero AS visits soft snow rather than lives in it, and the same test group found its soft-snow range narrower than wide-body carvers like the Blizzard Thunderbird R15 WB or Head Supershape e.Rally. The radius tops out at 16.0 m in the 178, so it will not stretch into relaxed GS arcs. And Stöckli does not publish a weight for this ski - the dealer workbook and stoeckli.ch both leave it out - so we do not quote one.
Within the Montero line the split is clean. The Montero AX (80 mm, 13.5-17.5 m radii) is the versatile middle ground, positioned by Stöckli for any terrain and any conditions. The Montero AR (84 mm, 14.2-18.4 m) is the long-radius end, with what Stöckli calls the stability of a giant slalom ski. The Montero AS is the one to pick when the season is mostly groomers and the turn itself is the point.
Sizing the Montero AS is simple because the sidecut does not change with length: the length you buy sets the radius. The 160 and 166 turn quickest, the 172 sits in the middle, and the 178 adds stability at speed.
