The take

Rock-solid at speed, calm, composed, and confidence-inspiring on edge.

The Montero AR is Stöckli's GS-style all-mountain carver — 84mm underfoot with dual titanal sheets and their Flex Torsion Control technology. The FTC uses S-shaped cutouts in the titanal at the tip and tail, filled with elastomer, which softens torsional flex at the extremities while keeping the center stiff. The result is easier turn initiation without sacrificing the locked-in feel underfoot.

On groomers and hardpack, the AR is in its element. Edge grip is top-tier, stability at speed is outstanding, and the ride stays smooth and composed when you push. It handles chopped-up crud and variable snow better than the narrower AX thanks to the wider 84mm waist. Reviewers describe it as a fusion of slalom and giant slalom performance.

The catch is that this ski needs skier input to come alive. At low speeds it's not particularly engaging — it rewards aggressive, dynamic skiing and strong technique. It's not a powder ski and won't replace a dedicated freeride setup, but for a groomer-first ski that handles real-world conditions, the AR delivers.

Compared to the AX (80mm), the AR is wider, heavier, and more GS-oriented. The AX is snappier and lighter; the AR is more composed in variable snow and wants bigger arcs at higher speeds.
