The OGASAKA U-PH is an all-mountain ski, 81 mm underfoot, and it is what the UNITY flagship becomes once the metal comes out. Three skis in the line share a body — 119.0-81.0-109.0 mm, sandwich construction, the same ultra-lightweight NF wood core. This one is built in Japan, and its materials field reads special F.R.P — no A7178, no metal. The U-PE adds an A7178 aluminum sheet. The U-PH does not, and OGASAKA built the ski around that subtraction.
Subtracting a layer shows up in print first as weight: 819 g/m for this ski, 958 for the U-PE, 813 for the U-PC — per meter, per single ski. The shape does not move. Tip rocker runs into camber underfoot with Front Lead Function, the sidecut is a Multi Arc Jointed Curve, and there are four lengths, 146 cm through 167.
OGASAKA built this one for the smoothest ride it could manage — its stated aim is a ski that will not wear you out over a long day — and its catalog promises strong carving on the groomed. The testers on record do not all read it that way. Their three grip marks came in at 3, 3.5 and 4, and the one at the bottom said plainly that razor-sharp edge hold is not this ski's business. Both statements stand, and the review keeps them side by side rather than picking the flattering one.
So this is the wrong ski if you want bite under load: that is the U-PE, the one holding the metal. At 81 mm it will not float deep powder, and it is not drawn for hard-snow racing. Its lengths end at 167 cm. It is not even the easiest UNITY, because OGASAKA positions the U-PC below it for exactly that.

The take
“The flagship shape with none of the metal: easier to bend, easier to steer, and short on bite when the snow goes hard.”
OGASAKA's own marketing calls the U-PH "Unity's fiberglass model," and the ski is best read as a subtraction. Its materials field lists special F.R.P. There is no A7178 in this ski and no metal anywhere in it, and OGASAKA's English product page, asked directly for aluminum, names none either. What OGASAKA says it was reaching for is unusually plain — the smoothest ride on the slopes, and a ski you can stay on for hours without getting tired. Read that closely. It is not a promise about grip.
The clearest change in print is weight. The U-PE is 958 g/m, this ski is 819, and the U-PC is 813. Each is grams per meter of a single ski, not a pair and not a finished total. Since OGASAKA publishes no flex rating and no per-length weight, those three figures are close to the whole paper case. On construction and shape the siblings do not diverge at all: the same sandwich over the same core, the same 119.0-81.0-109.0 mm, and the same Multi Arc Jointed Curve — which the U-PE and U-PC also carry, so it separates nothing.
The on-snow record is a single third-party staff test with three testers, two on the 167 cm and one on the 160. Handling and stability took their strongest marks, rigidity the weakest of the performance marks, which is what a layup with no metal in it predicts. Edge grip is where they split: the marks landed at 3, 3.5 and 4. The one who scored it lowest traced the feel to the change in reinforcement, described a ski gone light and supple, then said without softening it that this is not a razor-sharp, high-grip model, and pointed it instead at people who want a light ski to cruise on. A second, setting it directly against the U-PE, found this the more supple and easier-steering of the two, and recommended it to women and senior skiers. The tester on the 160 marked edge grip highest of the three, credited the 81 mm waist with carving on groomed snow, and called this the easiest ski to ski in the whole UNITY range. OGASAKA's catalog, meanwhile, claims excellent carving performance on groomed runs. Nothing available settles that against the tester who says otherwise, so both stay on the page.
So the choice has a clean shape. The U-PH is for a skier who would rather feel good at the end of a long day than fastest on one pitch. Grip under load is the U-PE's job, and its weight is the price. The easiest ski on this body is the U-PC — OGASAKA's catalog says so in plain words, six grams per meter apart though they are. Length decides turn shape: 12.4 m at 146 cm, 13.8 m at 153, 15.2 m at 160, 16.7 m at 167. The six scores beside this review are PTO's read of that record, not an OGASAKA rating.

As PTO stocks it, there is no separate binding decision to make: the ski arrives with the Marker package already on it. OGASAKA's catalog lists that package as an option for this model, and PTO's order sheet carries only the complete build. On the binding itself: a DIN indicator setting is a scale mark, not a measurement of the torque at which a binding will actually release. A technician has to set it against your boots and check it. - By one layer of the laminate. The U-PE lists an A7178 aluminum sheet in its materials; the U-PH lists special F.R.P and no metal at all. On the scale that reads 958 g/m against 819, grams per meter of one ski, and on snow a third-party tester who compared them called the U-PH the more supple and easier-steering of the pair. The U-PE also runs on to 174 cm, where this ski ends at 167.
- Is the OGASAKA U-PH a carving ski?
- It carves, but it is not a carving specialist. OGASAKA’s catalog claims excellent carving performance on groomed runs, and the tester on the 160 cm credited the 81 mm waist with exactly that. The tester who marked its edge grip lowest disagreed in plain words: not a razor-sharp, high-grip model, better pointed at cruising. Their three marks for edge grip were 3, 3.5 and 4. If hard-snow grip is the priority, look at the U-PE, which kept the metal, or further along OGASAKA’s harder-snow lines — KEO’S, TRIUN and the narrower U-XX among them.
- Should I get the OGASAKA U-PH or the U-PC?
- They share a shape, a core and a materials list, and sit six grams per meter apart on paper, so the spec sheet will not decide it. OGASAKA will: its catalog calls the U-PC easier to handle than the U-PH and recommends it for skiers with less power.
