Description

The OGASAKA ET-9.8 is an all-mountain ski, 98 mm at the waist, with no metal in it. OGASAKA's own rating is Powder 4, Piste 7 — two independent ratings rather than two halves of a split, and on the E-TURN ladder this is the first model where the piste number overtakes the powder one.

The build is a sandwich over an NF wood core in OGASAKA's ultra-lightweight grade, with special F.R.P. There is no aluminum in it. OGASAKA's generic definition of the sandwich structure mentions an A7178 sheet, but that describes what the structure type may contain across the range; this ski's component field lists wood and F.R.P. Its structure row carries one mark, FLF (Front Lead Function) — no Front Float System, and no Power Platform Function, the badge for OGASAKA's aluminum-in-the-core mechanism. TOP ROCKER is printed beside the profile drawing; no camber figure, no flex index and no per-length weight are published.

Four lengths run 165 to 186 cm on one 133.0-98.0-121.0 mm body, and the radius stretches from 14.4 m to 19.5 m. OGASAKA lists the ski at 933 g/m — a per-meter figure for one ski, not a pair weight — deliberately light for this width, because there is no metal to carry.

It suits a genuinely mixed season — soft snow, trees, sidecountry laps, then the groomers home. It is the wrong ski for a powder-first skier; OGASAKA builds the ET-10.8 and the ET-11.5 for that. It is the wrong ski for someone who never leaves the piste: the same $1,085 buys the ET-8.5, built the same way and scored Piste 8. Short-radius carvers should look at the KS-CX or the TC-S; the shortest ET-9.8 turns at 14.4 m. Carrying no metal at all, it is also wrong for anyone wanting damping mass on hard, chopped snow.

One caveat: this generation was given a new cut and a new core, so most older ET-9.8 write-ups describe a different ski. PTO stocks it flat: it needs a binding and a mount, and we do both. The review below covers the evidence, the ET-8.5 decision and length.

The take

933 g/m at 98 mm, with no aluminum in it: OGASAKA chose quickness over mass.

OGASAKA prints a two-number use rating on every model in the E-TURN line, and reading the ladder is the fastest way to place this ski. The ET-11.5, at 115 mm, is scored Powder 9 and Piste 1. The ET-10.8 is Powder 7 and Piste 3. The ET-9.8, at 98 mm, is Powder 4 and Piste 7 — the rung where the groomed number goes past the deep-snow one. They are two separate ratings, not two halves of a percentage, so 4 and 7 should not be read as a split.

What makes the ski unusual is what has been left out of it. The component field reads an NF wood core in the ultra-lightweight grade, plus OGASAKA's special F.R.P. No aluminum appears anywhere in the E-TURN line. A7178 does appear in OGASAKA's generic account of what a Sandwich build can contain, but that describes the structure type, not this ski's component field. That is a design decision with a bill attached, and the bill is paid in mass: this ski was built to be quick rather than damp. On hard, fast, cut-up snow there is less material to soak up the hits, and that follows from the structure rather than from anyone's test.

The number that shows the intent is 933 g/m — grams for each meter of one ski, not a pair and not a finished mass. Set against two of OGASAKA's own models it is striking: the 81 mm U-PE is 958 g/m and the 77 mm U-XX is 1,023, so the ET-9.8 is wider than both and lighter per meter than either. Do not stretch that further than it goes, though: the ET-8.5 is narrower than this ski and lighter still, at 851.

The published record on the ski PTO actually sells is one tester, one ride, at 172 cm, and no English-language review of it exists. He found it light and easy to handle, with a soft edge feel, and enjoyed the way it fluttered across chopped-up snow. He noted the radius is drawn on the large side and still found short turns came willingly. On speed he was careful rather than enthusiastic: as the pace came up, it held together to a reasonable degree. Reasonable — his word, and it should not be inflated into stability. He also calls the E-TURN a phantom model, one that rarely reaches demo events despite running for over twenty years, which is why so few independent eyes have been on it.

The real competition is a sibling. The ET-8.5 shares the construction, the mark, the profile label and the price — $1,085 — at 85 mm against 98, and 851 g/m against 933, and OGASAKA scores it Piste 8. The question is not which ski is better; it is how much of the season happens off the groomed run. On length, one body runs from 14.4 m of radius at 165 cm out to 19.5 m at 186, so the size you take is a turn-shape decision.

PTO stocks the ET-9.8 flat — no plate, no binding — and the bindings above are in-store options rather than an OGASAKA factory pairing. Brakes are bought in fixed widths, and the brake has to clear a 98 mm waist. The DIN number is an indicator setting read off a table, not a measurement of how a binding will let go; a technician sets it from your weight, height, age, boot sole length and skier type, and checks the release on a test device. Common Questions

Does the OGASAKA ET-9.8 have metal in it?
No. Its component field lists an NF wood core in the ultra-lightweight grade and OGASAKA's special F.R.P. The A7178 sheet OGASAKA uses elsewhere in its range appears in no E-TURN model, and this ski carries no Power Platform Function badge — that badge is where OGASAKA's core-embedded alloy sheet lives.
Should I buy the OGASAKA ET-9.8 or the ET-8.5?
Same construction, same $1,085, so width and turn shape decide it. The ET-8.5 is 85 mm, turns tighter at every length, and is scored Powder 3, Piste 8. The ET-9.8 is 98 mm and scored Powder 4, Piste 7. If soft snow and sidecountry are a real part of the season, the 9.8 is the one that fits. If the groomed run is the season, the 8.5 is the cleaner match.
What does the 933 g/m weight actually mean?
OGASAKA quotes weight per meter of a single ski, under the heading WEIGHT½. It is not a pair weight, and no finished per-length figure is published for any of its skis. Multiplying it out by length is arithmetic, not an OGASAKA number.
Is this the same ET-9.8 that was reviewed a couple of seasons ago?
No. The current ski was re-cut and re-cored: the tip narrowed from 136 to 133 mm, the tail widened from 120 to 121, the radius at 179 cm dropped from 18.6 to 17.7 m, the core moved to the ultra-lightweight grade, and the base changed from graphite to natural. Most published ET-9.8 impressions describe the earlier ski.
What camber and rocker profile does the ET-9.8 have?
OGASAKA prints TOP ROCKER beside the profile drawing and publishes nothing beyond it — no camber figure, no rocker length. An absent label is not a statement that the rest of the ski is flat; the profile behind the tip is simply not published.
