Description
The OGASAKA KS-UP is a technical all-round piste ski, 69 mm underfoot — the widest waist in the KEO'S TECHNICAL line. "UP" stands for Universal Pro. OGASAKA builds it four ways: flat, on the FM585 plate, on the new SRED plate, or with a Tyrolia PRD12GW binding on the M-FLEX PRO BASE. PTO ordered that last one only — $1,510, binding included.
Its radius climbs from 12.1 m at the 155 to 14.7 m at the 170 — roughly a meter longer at every size than the KS-AP2 alongside it. The build is a sandwich: sheets of special F.R.P and A7178 aluminum alloy, laminated onto the top and bottom of an NF wood core. The metal is a laminate in the stack, not OGASAKA's Power Platform Function; that mark is absent from this ski's structure row, and the stiff-underfoot behavior it denotes is not claimed here. OGASAKA publishes where the sheet sits and nothing about how far it runs. For profile it publishes one mark: Front Float System, a front rocker shape. No camber profile, no flex index. Weight is 1,012 g/m, grams per meter of a single ski.
OGASAKA aims the ski at prize tests; three of the Japanese on-snow reports land on that same exam use case. A national demonstrator called its edge grip strong on hard pack. In moguls, the two demonstrators a Japanese magazine named each rated it highly — its words, not ours. Wrong ski for short-turn specialists: the KS-AP2 is drawn tighter at the same $1,250 bare-ski price, and the metal-free KS-CX and KS-CV tighter again. Wrong ski, too, for competition-level long turns, and at 69 mm for powder. Two of the four score-cards written on the exact build PTO stocks put its grip below the plate versions'. The take
“About a meter more radius than the KS-AP2 at every length — that one number is the case for this ski, and the case against it.”
The OGASAKA KS-UP's whole argument is one number. At every length its arc runs about a meter longer than the KS-AP2's next to it in the line: 12.1, 12.9, 13.8 and 14.7 m against the AP2's 11.1, 11.9, 12.7 and 13.6. The two skis cost the same money — $1,250 as bare skis, $1,510 against $1,520 with the same binding — so what is being decided here is turn shape, not budget.
One claim has to be got right. This ski's structure row carries two OGASAKA marks, Front Float System and Front Lead Function, and not the third: Power Platform Function, whose aluminum sheet raises rigidity in one zone underfoot and leaves tip and tail relatively more flexible. The A7178 here is a construction material in a sandwich layup; none of that underfoot mechanism is claimed for this ski. Front Float is also the only thing OGASAKA says about profile — a front rocker shape. Beyond that and 1,012 g/m, grams for each meter of a single ski, there is very little on paper to hold it to.
No English-language review of the KS-UP exists. The on-snow record is Japanese: ten reports from three sources, all from the 25-26 season, on a ski OGASAKA has carried over unchanged. Grip and tip engagement carry the praise, and both lines come from one national demonstrator: the edge bites hard, hard pack feels good under it, and it holds from the tip to the end of the turn. An instructor, riding a 165 separately, called the way the tip catches snow OGASAKA at its best. The claim that matters most is accuracy — per a demonstrator, you set the edge, load it, commit, and the arc arrives, with moderate rebound and a high turn success rate. In moguls the magazine says it outright: both of the demonstrators it named rated the bump performance highly. The ceiling is honest too. At technical-championship level, the instructor said plainly, this ski will not generate the vertical drop a competition long turn needs.
Turn shape is where the record splits, and it stays split. Three reports read the KS-UP as biased toward mid and long turns; the instructor found short turns entirely natural, the only 155 cm ride praised its quick competitive turns, and a demonstrator rebutted the short-turn doubt head-on. PTO's build cuts both ways too. Two of the four staff cards on this exact binding package call its grip thinner than the plate builds', and one of those two also warns that a rebound-hungry skier may want more underfoot. A third card, having ridden both, preferred the FM585. What those cards give back is freedom — easy to flex, light in the hands, and one, scoring it 5 out of 5 overall, said the arc could be set anywhere from short to long. Length is the other lever: the radius shrinks with the ski. The six scores beside this review are PTO's read of that record, not an OGASAKA rating.

The same ski is also offered bare and on two plates (FM585, SRED). PTO ordered none of those, so a skier who wants the extra underfoot grip a plate build is drawn for is not served by the SKU on this shelf. On the binding itself: a DIN indicator setting is a scale mark, not a measurement of the torque at which a binding will actually release, and OGASAKA does not publish a boot-sole standard for this package. - Does the A7178 aluminum stiffen the OGASAKA KS-UP underfoot?
- No. That mechanism belongs to Power Platform Function, a separate OGASAKA technology whose mark the KS-UP does not carry — its structure row lists Front Float System and Front Lead Function only. Power Platform Function is defined by what it does to one zone: OGASAKA says it raises rigidity in specific areas, and that stiffening the ski under the boot leaves the tip and tail feeling relatively more flexible. The A7178 here is a structural laminate, and OGASAKA never publishes how far it runs — so no claim about which part of this ski it stiffens is one OGASAKA has made.
- OGASAKA KS-UP or KS-AP2?
- Arc decides it. The KS-AP2 is drawn about a meter shorter in the turn at every length, and the two skis share a $1,250 flat price and a construction cell in OGASAKA's spec table (the binding packages differ by $10: $1,510 against $1,520). They are not identical otherwise: the KS-AP2 is 1,018 g/m against the KS-UP's 1,012, and it is the KS-AP2's catalog prose, not the KS-UP's, that names an all-beech core. Short turns first points to the KS-AP2; mid and long turns first, without giving up the short ones, points to the KS-UP.
- A 12.1-14.7 m radius sounds long. Can the KS-UP really turn short?
- The Japanese reports say yes, repeatedly: one national demonstrator rebutted the doubt directly, an instructor found short turns entirely natural, and the only 155 cm ride praised its quick, competitive turns. OGASAKA draws the sidecut as a series of joined arcs rather than one continuous radius, and a shorter ski carries a shorter radius. Three reports still read the ski as biased toward mid and long turns, so the disagreement is real and we are not going to flatten it.
