PTO Verdict

“Edges lifted off the snow, bindings your choice, and a 55 lb ceiling: a first board for the smallest kids.”

Best for: A toddler or small child inside Burton's 25 to 55 lb range, in their first days on snow: standing, sliding, stopping and first turns on the gentlest terrain. Also the family that already has kids' bindings, is handing a pair down, or wants to choose them for the child's boots.

Not for: A child over 55 lb: the 100 ends there, and Burton's Grom Flat Top picks up from its 120 cm for 50 to 80 lb. A parent who wants board and bindings in one box, which is what the After School Special package provides. A child in boots past US 13C, beyond Burton's paired Mini Grom Disc binding. And a child who already links turns on green runs and needs a longer board to grow on.

Description

Burton's Mini Grom Flat Top is a first snowboard for toddlers and small kids, sold as a board without bindings. It is a Flat Top twin with Easy Bevel and a flex Burton labels Soft & Playful, made in 80, 90 and 100 cm for riders from 25 to 55 lb.

The shape is all about keeping a small child upright. The base runs flat between the feet for a stable platform, and the tip and tail kick up. Easy Bevel then rounds the base: a convex profile lifts the edges clear of the snow, and Burton calls catching one "virtually impossible." Under that is a Fly wood core wrapped in Biax fiberglass, which Burton describes as torsionally soft and forgiving for beginning riders, plus an extruded base that asks for little maintenance. Stance location is 0 on all three lengths, so the board rides the same whichever foot a child puts forward. Burton also lists it as Riglet compatible: the tow accessory, sold separately, attaches to the nose or tail so a parent can pull the board with or without bindings.

The Mini Grom is the wrong board for a child heavier than 55 lb, where Burton's chart for the 100 ends; for that child, Burton's Grom Flat Top takes over, and its 120 cm is rated for 50 to 80 lb. It is also the wrong buy if you want everything in one box. Burton's After School Special package carries the same specs and size chart with kids' bindings already mounted.

Two sizes overlap on weight: the 80 and 90 both list 25 to 50 lb, so pick between them by how small the child is, with reference stances of 305 mm and 330 mm. Bindings are a separate purchase; Burton pairs this board with its Mini Grom Disc, a one-buckle binding made in size S for boots from US 7C to 13C. With your child's boots and weight in hand, we help choose the length and bindings, then mount them and set the stance width when you buy the board from us.

The take

“Edges lifted off the snow, bindings your choice, and a 55 lb ceiling: a first board for the smallest kids.”

The Burton Mini Grom Flat Top is built for a toddler or small child's first days on a snowboard. Burton rates the riding level Beginner, offers three lengths from 80 to 100 cm, and prints a rider range of 25 to 55 lb. Bindings are a separate purchase, so the board itself is only half of the decision.

First decide whether you want the board on its own. Burton's After School Special package matches it on paper, with identical tech spec rows and the same size chart, and arrives with kids' bindings mounted. The board alone makes sense when a child already owns small bindings, when an older sibling is handing a pair down, or when you want to pick the binding to fit the boot. Two owner reviews on Burton's page describe that path: a child moves up from the After School Special to a Mini Grom, and in one family the package passes to a younger sibling.

Boot size decides the binding. Burton's own pairing is the Mini Grom Disc, a single-buckle binding in size S for US 7C to 13C, and its Mini Grom boot covers the same 7C to 13C. A child in a 1K boot or larger is past that binding's range. Our read: when the boots pass 13C, the next Burton board is usually the right move, and we check boot overhang on the board before mounting anything.

Weight does not settle the choice between the 80 and 90, since both carry 25 to 50 lb; it comes down to how small the child is. The 80 runs a 305 mm reference stance on 480 mm of effective edge, the 90 a 330 mm stance on 580 mm. The 100 covers 40 to 55 lb on a 355 mm stance.

Two other Burton boards bracket this one. Below, the Riglet is one 90 cm edgeless board with a built-in tow reel; the Mini Grom instead takes the Riglet accessory at nose or tail, sold separately, so it can be pulled before a child rides on its edges. Above, the Grom Flat Top keeps Flat Top with Easy Bevel in 110 to 130 cm for 40 to 100 lb, and a child just past 55 lb starts on its 120 cm.

Bindings we'd pair with it

Mount point: Centered - stance location 0 on every size. Our pick: Burton Mini Grom Disc (size S, US 7C-13C), Burton's listed pairing.

Bindings are sold separately. Bring your child's boots: we help choose the binding size, mount the bindings on a board bought here, set the stance width, and our technician confirms the setup.

Common Questions

Burton Mini Grom Flat Top vs After School Special: what is the difference?
The Burton Mini Grom Flat Top is sold as a board only, while the After School Special package adds kids' bindings mounted by Burton. On Burton's pages the two boards share the same tech specs and the 80, 90 and 100 cm size chart. Pick the Mini Grom if your child already has bindings or you want to choose them.
What size Burton Mini Grom Flat Top should I get?
Size the Burton Mini Grom Flat Top by weight first: the 80 and 90 cover 25 to 50 lb, the 100 covers 40 to 55 lb. Between the 80 and 90, the smaller child usually suits the 80 and its 305 mm reference stance. Bring your child's weight and boots and we help pick the length.
Is the Burton Mini Grom Flat Top good for beginners?
Yes, the Burton Mini Grom Flat Top is made for a child's first days: Burton rates it Beginner and builds it Flat Top with Easy Bevel, a convex base that keeps the edges off the snow. It suits a toddler learning to stand, slide and stop. A child already linking turns on green runs, or over 55 lb, has outgrown it.
What bindings fit the Burton Mini Grom Flat Top?
The Burton Mini Grom Flat Top uses Burton's 3D inserts and comes without bindings. Burton pairs it with the Mini Grom Disc binding, size S for kids' boots US 7C to 13C. Bring your child's boots, and our technician confirms the binding fit and setup at mounting.
Burton Mini Grom vs Grom: when should my child move up?
Move up from the Burton Mini Grom Flat Top when your child passes 55 lb, the top of the 100's range, or starts linking turns on green runs. Burton's next board, the Grom Flat Top, uses the same Easy Bevel base in lengths of 110, 120 and 130 cm. Its 120 cm, rated 50 to 80 lb, is where a child just over 55 lb usually lands.
Burton Mini Grom Flat Top 2027 vs 2026: what changed?
Burton's 2027 and 2026 pages for the Mini Grom Flat Top list the same tech specs and size chart: Flat Top with Easy Bevel, Fly core, Biax glass, extruded base, and lengths of 80, 90 and 100 cm covering 25 to 55 lb. Burton flags the 2026 board as a carry-over model.
