PTO Verdict
“A carving ski that feels alive. The swallowtail snaps you out of every turn like a rubber band.”
Best for: Intermediate-to-advanced skiers who love carving groomers and want something lighter and more playful than traditional metal carving skis.
Not for: Ice coast carvers who need maximum edge hold. High-speed chargers. Anyone who ventures off-piste.

Description
The Octo is Black Crows' frontside carving ski — 84mm underfoot with a short 14m radius and a sporty flex, so it's quick edge-to-edge and snappy through short-to-medium turns on groomers. A poplar and fiberglass core — no titanal underfoot, just an aluminum insert in the tail — keeps it light and lively rather than damp and demanding, and the tapered tips, a small swallowtail (more styling than float), and a bit of tip rocker let you break it loose and skid or change turn shape when you want. It carves clean but doesn't punish you for getting playful.
It suits an intermediate-to-advanced skier who mostly skis groomers and wants a quick, energetic carver that's still forgiving. At 84mm with no metal laminate it's a frontside ski, not an all-mountain charger — not built for powder, deep off-piste, or hard charging on firm snow at speed. If you want stability and damping at speed, look at a metal-laminate carver; for soft snow, go wider.

The take
“A carving ski that feels alive. The swallowtail snaps you out of every turn like a rubber band.”
The Octo is Black Crows doing carving their way. Instead of titanal and race-stiff construction, they built a poplar/fiberglass carver with a swallowtail and a 14m radius. The result feels totally different from a Head Supershape or Stockli Laser -- lighter, livelier, with a distinctive snap at the end of each turn from the swallowtail releasing the tail early.
On well-groomed corduroy, the Octo is addictive. The 84mm waist makes edge-to-edge transitions razor-quick, and the 14m radius means short, rhythmic arcs happen almost by themselves. Push it into long GS-style arcs at high speed and you find its ceiling -- no titanal, no damping.
The swallowtail reduces effective edge at the tail, so the ski releases from turns faster. Some skiers love this energy. Others find it too abrupt. Test it before you commit if you can.
