Hestra Gauntlet CZone Jr Mitt

Micron, a polyester fabric, covers the back of the hand. Hestra lists it as windproof, waterproof and breathable. There's a PU grip in the palm. Fiberfill and foam provide the insulation, alongside the CZone insert and a brushed polyester lining. Hestra's spec doesn't call the lining removable.

At the wrist there's a snow lock, an inner cuff that closes around the wrist to keep snow out, plus a wrist strap that fastens with Velcro. Handcuffs, Hestra's name for wrist leashes, are part of the spec, so a mitt that comes off stays on the wrist instead of in the snow. When it's dirty, the whole mitt can go in the washing machine.

A mitt keeps all four fingers in one compartment, so they share warmth. That's the reason to choose this hand shape for a kid who runs cold. The brushed polyester lining sits against the hand, with Fiberfill and foam doing the insulating. The waterproof layer is the CZone insert.

What you give up is dexterity. Zippers and buckles are harder in a mitt, so a parent may end up doing them.

Hestra junior sizes are numbers too. The mitt comes in sizes 3 through 7, and all four colorways run the full range: Dark Navy/Sky Blue, Grey/Blk, Parfait/Black and Fuchsia/Ivory.

Choose it for a kid whose hands get cold and who doesn't need fine finger work on the hill. If they do, two siblings share this mitt's polyester backhand, PU grip in the palm, insulation, CZone insert, snow lock and handcuffs.

The Gauntlet CZone Jr is the five-finger version, with every finger separate. The Gauntlet CZone Jr 3-finger is the middle ground: a free index finger, the other three fingers together, and a five-finger lining inside.
