PTO Verdict

“A light 90 mm teen ski that pivots and forgives, and gives up composure when a strong skier pushes it on ice.”

Best for: Teens aged 14 to 18 who have the basics down and want one ski for the whole resort: groomers, bumps, trees and soft snow. The forgiving flex and easy-pivoting double rocker suit a progressing skier, and the four shorter lengths stay at 1,450 g per ski or less for lighter teens moving up from a kids' ski.

Not for: Children under 14, or anyone who needs a ski shorter than 139.3 cm: the Junius is Black Crows' ski for ages 7 to 13, from 101.1 cm. Park-first teens who want a twin tip: Black Crows does not describe the Camox Jr as one, and calls the Junius a twin tip. Strong, heavy or fast teens on hard snow: no metal is listed in the published materials and the flex is tolerant, so the adult Captis Birdie at 90 mm is the better match. Powder-first teens: Black Crows rates the float at this width as intermediate, and the adult Camox at 97 mm floats better.

Description

Black Crows' Camox Jr is an all-mountain ski for teenagers, built by Black Crows for skiers aged 14 to 18. It is 90 mm underfoot at every length, with a radius that grows from 16 m to 18 m (17 m at 157.3 cm), and it comes in five lengths from 139.3 to 171.1 cm.

The build is straightforward: a poplar and fiberglass core, semi-cap construction with ABS sidewalls all around, and a double rocker at tip and tail around a classic medium camber section. The published materials list no metal, and the weight is 1,200 g per ski at 139.3 cm and 1,450 g at 164.2. Black Crows calls the flex tolerant and progressive and the sidecut slightly short, for carving and reactivity.

The Camox Jr suits a teen who has the basics down and wants one ski for groomers, bumps, trees and soft snow around the resort. It is the wrong ski for kids younger than 14, or for a skier who needs less than 139.3 cm of ski: Black Crows' Junius covers ages 7 to 13, starting at 101.1 cm. Nor is it the pick for a teen who lives in the park and wants a twin tip: Black Crows' own copy for the Camox Jr does not use the term. For strong, heavy teens who ski fast on hard snow, the adult Captis Birdie, also 90 mm, is the next step. Float is the other limit: Black Crows' word for it at 90 mm is 'intermediate', so it is not a powder ski either.

Like any flat ski, the Camox Jr comes without bindings. With no size chart from Black Crows, we choose the length from height, weight and ability, fit a binding with a brake that clears the 90 mm waist, mount it at the -6 cm mark and set the release at fitting.

The take

“A light 90 mm teen ski that pivots and forgives, and gives up composure when a strong skier pushes it on ice.”

The Black Crows Camox Jr is a 90 mm all-mountain ski for 14 to 18 year olds, and everything in its layup points at a teen still building technique. Black Crows pairs a double rocker with a classic medium camber underfoot, describes the flex as 'tolerant & progressive', and lists a poplar and fiberglass core, with no metal listed in the published materials. Semi-cap construction and ABS sidewalls all around finish it. In materials it matches the adult Captis Birdie, with a narrower 118 mm tip against the Captis Birdie's 123 to 127 mm.

On snow, PTO's read of the Camox Jr follows from that layup. The rockered ends let a teen pivot the ski and slide it sideways in bumps and trees with little effort, and the cambered middle holds an edge on groomed snow once the skier tips it over. Black Crows' own words are 'very accessible and grippy', with 'pivot and ease of steering'. The price of a light ski with a forgiving flex and no metal listed in its published materials is damping: pushed fast on firm or icy snow, it loses composure sooner than a heavier adult ski, and a strong teen will find that ceiling.

Length is a real decision on the Camox Jr, because the shape changes with it. Tip and waist stay at 118 and 90 mm, but the radius runs 16 m on the 139.3 and 149.3, 17 m on the 157.3 and 164.2, and 18 m on the 171.1, while weight climbs from 1,200 to 1,600 g per ski. A lighter teen on a shorter size gets a tighter, easier turn; the 171.1 carries the same 18 m radius as every adult Camox. Black Crows gives no height or weight chart, so we set the length in the shop from height, weight and how the teen skis.

Within the Black Crows range, the Camox Jr sits between the Junius and the adult 90 mm skis. The Junius is the younger junior ski, for ages 7 to 13 in 101.1 to 141.1 cm, and Black Crows calls it a twin tip. The Camox Birdie Jr shares the Camox Jr's published specs and description but stops at 164.2 cm. Above it, the Captis Birdie keeps the 90 mm waist in adult lengths from 154.4 cm, weighs more (1,625 g at 166.2 cm against 1,450 g for the Camox Jr at 164.2) and is the ski Black Crows credits with a long effective edge for grip at high speeds. For soft snow, the adult Camox goes to 97 mm, which Black Crows rates 'good' for float, where the Camox Jr is rated 'intermediate'.

The Camox Jr is sold flat. Black Crows recommends a -6 cm mount point, switches the drilling spec from L7 to L9 mm at 164.2 cm, and offers the Marker Squire 10 or Salomon L7 GW with it on its own site. A technician confirms that boot and binding work together and sets the release.

Bindings we'd pair with it

Mount point: Flat ski, sold without bindings; recommended mount point -6 cm. Our pick: A binding whose brake clears the 90 mm waist, mounted and set at fitting.

Black Crows specifies 3.5 mm x L7 mm drilling on the 139.3, 149.3 and 157.3, and 3.5 mm x L9 mm on the 164.2 and 171.1. Boot-to-binding compatibility and the release setting are checked by a technician.
