Description
The Women's Burton Waverange X Step On (26/27) is a soft, surfy Step On® snowboard boot that closes with two BOA® dials, one for the shell and one for an internal Ankle Hammock that holds the heel. Burton calls the flex a softer mid-flex, labels it Happy Medium, publishes no flex number or last width, and builds it in Regular and Wide from US women's 5 to 11; this page carries Black, with Regular in 8 sizes from US 5 to 9 and Wide in US 6.5 to 8 plus 10.
Two toe cleats and a heel cleat lock it into a Step On binding. The hammock is an inner cuff that pulls the heel back into its pocket. The heat-moldable Asym Imprint™ 3 liner adds a hook-and-loop closure, an inner lace lock and an asymmetric wrap cuff. Burton describes the Waverange shell as having a shorter backstay, a slit two-piece ankle panel and a narrower arch reinforcement, for ankle movement and board feel. The X Flex Vibram® outsole uses EcoStep rubber with 30% recycled content.
What changed from 25/26: Burton's women's 25/26 page lists a Dual Zone BOA® controlling the upper and lower boot independently, a Focus Cuff and an Imprint™ 3 liner. For 26/27 the second dial goes to the Ankle Hammock and the liner becomes the Asym Imprint™ 3.
Treat it as a playful boot for riders who rate a separate heel-hold dial above response. It is the wrong boot for anyone keeping strap bindings, since Burton says Step On boots are only compatible with Step On bindings, and for hard carvers, who get the same fit system on Burton's firm women's Highshot X Step On.
Your binding size follows the boot on Burton's women's chart: US 5 to 6 takes a Small, 6.5 to 8.5 a Medium and 9 to 11 a Large. Burton warns that boots and bindings in incompatible sizes will malfunction, and that mixing men's and women's Step On gear will also malfunction. We measure your feet, heat-mold the liner and help match the binding size in the shop.

Burton Women's Waverange X Step On
2026/27
Flex
Happy Medium, the middle of Burton's three Personality labels (Soft & Playful, Happy Medium, Stiff & Aggressive). Burton calls it a softer mid-flex and gives no flex number.
Flex ratings are the brand’s own and do not compare across brands.
Burton's women's Waverange X Step On is the softer twin of the women's Highshot X Step On. Both list the same two-dial closure, Asym Imprint 3 liner and Ankle Hammock. Burton calls the Highshot X firm and builds it for riders who like a responsive, powerful boot.
From 25/26 to 26/27, the women's Waverange X Step On trades separate upper and lower shell zones and a Focus Cuff for a heel-hold dial. That trade favors riders whose heel lifts inside the boot, since heel hold now gets a separate dial. It costs riders who liked a snug upper boot over a looser lower boot, because one dial now closes the whole shell.
That hammock is the fit question to settle first. An independent tester rode a hammock of the same name in the men's 26/27 Highshot X Step On: it stopped heel lift but caused pressure points at every tension he tried, and it folded over onto the top of his foot. He called it hit or miss across feet, so try the women's Waverange X on against your own instep.
The closest ride report is for the men's 25/26 Waverange X Step On, with the earlier closure. Its tester called it the softest boot he had tried, with little toe-side response, a lopsided feel and visible breakdown after a few days of riding, and on hard carves the boot folded forward and drove his heel into the Step On heel plastic. He also found good board feel and excellent traction from an outsole with the same X Flex Vibram name. Read that as a men's boot on an older build; Burton has not said whether the new closure changes the flex.
The women's Waverange X Step On earns its place once the hammock has passed a try-on. After that, comparing it with Burton's women's Waverange Step On and Waverange X Pro Step On starts with dial count. The Waverange Step On runs one Sequence BOA dial, this boot runs two, and the Waverange X Pro Step On runs three, with separate dials at the cuff, ankle and forefoot. Riders who miss the 25/26 upper-and-lower split will find a cuff dial and a forefoot dial on the X Pro.
Fit
Women's US sizing, Regular and Wide on this listing
Burton publishes no last name, last width or volume figure for the women's Waverange X Step On. Burton makes Regular and Wide versions; this listing carries Regular in 8 sizes and Wide in 5, with US 5, 6, 8.5 and 9 in Regular only and US 10 in Wide only here.
Snowboard boots are sized by foot length, not a shell-width figure.
Closure

Liner
Women's Asym Imprint™ 3 — heat-moldable, with an inner lace lock and an asymmetric wrap cuff
Outsole
X Flex Vibram® Step On® Outsole, Vibram® EcoStep rubber
Technology
Step On®
A strapless boot-to-binding connection: the boot clicks into a Step On® binding at two toe cleats and one heel cleat. Burton describes it as an instant boot-to-binding connection.
Dual Zone BOA® w/ Internal Hammock
Per Burton, one BOA® dial closes the shell and a second, independent dial tensions an internal hammock around the ankle.
Ankle Hammock
An inner cuff that holds the heel into the heel pocket, tensioned by its own external BOA® dial so it can be adjusted on the mountain.
Women's Asym Imprint™ 3 Liner
A heat-moldable liner with moisture management, lightweight power panels, an asymmetric wrap cuff, and a hook-and-loop closure backed by an inner lace lock.
X Flex Vibram® Step On® Outsole
Vibram® EcoStep rubber with traction lugs and 30% recycled content. The X Flex version goes on the Waverange X; Burton fits the X Firm outsole to the Highshot X.
Waverange shell
Burton gives the Waverange a shorter backstay for a more maneuverable ankle flex, a two-piece ankle panel with a slit, and an arch reinforcement narrower than the Highshot's, which Burton credits with enhanced board feel.
Cuff Clip
A clip on the back of the boot that holds the pant cuff clear of the heel connection.

Best For
Riders on, or moving to, women's Step On bindings who want a soft, surfy boot with a heel-hold dial of its own. The Ankle Hammock runs separately from the shell dial. One tester thought the earlier men's Waverange X could suit skate- and surf-style riders who want a more natural feel. Riders who need a Wide can choose US 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8 or 10 in Wide on this listing.
Limitations
- −Burton's Step On boots work only with Step On bindings
- −One BOA dial now closes the whole shell
- −A same-named hammock pressed on a men's Highshot X tester's instep
- −A men's 25/26 Waverange X tested very soft, with lopsided response
- −Burton publishes no weight, last width or flex number
Not For
Not for strap-binding riders: Burton states that its Step On boots pair only with Step On bindings. Not for hard carving, where Burton's firmer women's Highshot X Step On is the better pick, and where the soft men's 25/26 Waverange X drove a tester's heel into the Step On heel plastic. Not for riders who want the upper and lower shell set separately, because the 26/27 shell closes on one dial. Not for a touchy instep that cannot be tried on first. Not for riders who want everything on one dial; Burton's women's Waverange Step On uses a single Sequence BOA. And not for pairing with a men's Step On binding, since Burton warns against combining men's and women's Step On products.

Common Questions
- Burton Women's Waverange X vs Highshot X Step On: what is the difference?
- Burton's women's Waverange X Step On and Highshot X Step On share the Dual Zone BOA with internal hammock, the Asym Imprint 3 liner and the Ankle Hammock. The Waverange X uses a shorter backstay, a slit ankle panel and the X Flex Vibram outsole, with a softer mid-flex; the Highshot X uses a taller backstay, a one-piece shell and the X Firm outsole, and Burton calls it firm.
- Burton Women's Waverange X vs Waverange X Pro Step On: what is the difference?
- Burton's women's Waverange X Step On splits its fit across two BOA dials, the shell and the internal ankle hammock. The women's Waverange X Pro Step On uses three independent dials, for the upper cuff, the ankle and the forefoot, on an X Pro Flex Vibram outsole. Pick the X Pro if you want the forefoot and cuff tuned on separate dials.
- What size Burton Women's Waverange X Step On should I get?
- Size Burton's women's Waverange X Step On by foot length in US women's sizes, then try it on with the hammock tensioned. On this listing, Regular comes in US 5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5 and 9, and Wide in 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8 and 10. Burton's women's chart sets the binding size: S for US 5 to 6, M for 6.5 to 8.5, L for 9 to 11.
- Is the Burton Women's Waverange X Step On good for beginners?
- Burton gives the women's Waverange X Step On no rider level; it calls the boot a softer mid-flex and labels it Happy Medium. PTO reads it as a boot for progressing and intermediate riders who like a soft, playful feel, and a newer rider can learn on it. Riders who already carve hard will want the firmer women's Highshot X Step On.
- Does the Burton Women's Waverange X Step On work with strap bindings?
- No. Burton says its Step On boots, the women's Waverange X Step On included, work only with Step On bindings. The pairing is size- and gender-specific: Burton warns that mismatched boot and binding sizes will malfunction and that men's and women's Step On products must not be combined. A PTO technician helps match the binding size to your boot at fitting.
- Burton Women's Waverange X Step On 2027 vs 2026: what changed?
- Burton's 26/27 women's Waverange X Step On swaps the 25/26 boot's upper-and-lower Dual-Zone BOA and Focus Cuff for a shell dial plus an internal Ankle Hammock, and lists an Asym Imprint 3 liner in place of the Imprint 3. Burton's 26/27 colors are Black and Nightshade Purple, and the run includes a US women's 11.
