Description

The Burton Men's Waverange X Pro Step On (26/27) is a men's Step On® snowboard boot that closes with three independent BOA® dials over a heat-moldable Asym Life Liner. Burton calls the flex a surfy mid-flex but publishes no flex number or last width, and builds it in Regular and Wide in US men's 6 and 7, half sizes from 7.5 to 11.5, then 12, 13, 14 and 15; this page carries Black in both widths, though not every size comes in both.

Step On® replaces binding straps with two toe cleats and a heel cleat that lock into a Step On binding. Burton's Triple Dial PerformFit™ Wrap splits the fit into three zones: one dial sets the upper cuff, one tensions the Ankle Hammock, an inner cuff that holds the heel in its pocket, and one pulls a wrapping panel on the liner over the top of the forefoot. The Waverange shell has a shorter backstay and a two-piece ankle panel with a slit, which Burton builds for side-to-side movement, plus a narrower arch reinforcement for board feel. The X Pro Flex Vibram® outsole is EcoStep Plus rubber with 50% recycled content.

Burton places it, with the Highshot X Pro, at the top of its Waverange and Highshot Step On lineup, and labels it Happy Medium. Treat it as a soft, surfy boot for riders who want fine fit control more than response. It is the wrong boot for anyone keeping strap bindings, because Burton says Step On boots are only compatible with Step On bindings.

Burton publishes no weight. Its men's Step On chart sizes the binding from the boot: US 6 to 8 takes a Small, 8.5 to 10.5 a Medium, 11 to 13 a Large and 14 to 15 an XL, and Burton warns that mismatched sizes will malfunction and keeps its Step On sizing gender-specific, men's boots with men's bindings. Bring the socks you ride in: we measure your feet, heat-mold the liner and match the binding size to the boot.

Burton Men's Waverange X Pro Step On

2026/27

Burton BOA® Triple Dial PerformFit™ WrapBurton logo

Flex

2/3

Happy Medium, the middle of Burton's three Personality labels (Soft & Playful, Happy Medium, Stiff & Aggressive). Burton calls it a surfy mid-flex and gives no flex number.

Flex ratings are the brand’s own and do not compare across brands.

The Waverange X Pro Step On is a buy for Step On riders who rank fit control and a soft, surfy flex above response, and a pass for anyone who carves hard. It shares the Triple Dial PerformFit Wrap, the Asym Life Liner and the Ankle Hammock with the Highshot X Pro Step On; Burton calls this boot a surfy mid-flex and the Highshot X Pro firm, so choosing between the two comes down to flex.

Against Burton's Waverange X Step On one step down, which uses Dual-Zone BOA with an internal ankle hammock, the X Pro's case is the third dial. A rider who has traded a tight instep for a loose heel in a one- or two-dial boot gets separate control of each zone.

One independent site put two riders on the 25/26 Waverange X Pro Step On, and the result splits by riding style. They rated adjustability great, traction from the Vibram sole excellent and heel hold good, and found the lateral flex close to a strap-binding boot. They also called its flex very soft, with very little response, poor flex retention and shock absorption well below most other Burton boots. The same site found the Highshot X Pro a good bit stiffer. They called it mainly a park boot and warned that its thick heel loop can drag for hard carvers.

Heel comfort is this boot's sharpest caution. On harder toe-side turns, one tester's boot folded forward and pressed his heel into the hard plastic around the Step On heel, painful enough that he called it not his type of boot; a tester also found the ankle support caused a pressure point. Length reports disagree too: the site's table says true to size, one tester found it a little long next to most Burton boots, and the other wanted to size up. Try it on before you choose.

Season to season, Burton lists the same Tech Specs for the 25/26 and 26/27 Waverange X Pro Step On: lacing, liner, inner cuff, outsole, DRYRIDE lining and the Happy Medium label all match. The 26/27 page changes the colors to Black and Dried Moss / Multi, adds a US 6, and rewords the flex from a softer mid-flex to a surfy mid-flex. Burton publishes no change list, so the 25/26 test reads as a guide to this boot.

Fit

Men's US sizing, Regular and Wide on this listing

Burton publishes no last name, last width or volume figure for the Waverange X Pro Step On. Burton makes Regular and Wide versions; this listing carries Regular in 12 sizes and Wide in 8, and not every size comes in both widths.

Snowboard boots are sized by foot length, not a shell-width figure.

Liner

Asym Life Liner — heat-moldable foam with an asymmetric wrap cuff and DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ lining

Outsole

X Pro Flex Vibram® Step On® Outsole, Vibram® EcoStep Plus rubber

Technology

Step On®

A strapless boot-to-binding connection: two toe cleats and a heel cleat lock the boot into a Step On® binding. Burton pitches it as stepping in and riding the moment you are off the lift.

Burton BOA® Triple Dial PerformFit™ Wrap

Three independent BOA® dials for the upper cuff, the ankle hammock and the forefoot. The forefoot dial wraps a panel built on the liner across the instep. Burton describes a micro-adjustable, zonal fit that locks in the heel.

Ankle Hammock

An inner cuff that holds the heel into the heel pocket, tensioned by its own external BOA® dial so it can be adjusted on the mountain.

Asym Life Liner

A lightweight, heat-moldable foam liner with an asymmetric wrap cuff and hook-and-loop closure. Its DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ lining manages sweat and reflects body heat inward, per Burton.

X Pro Flex Vibram® Step On® Outsole

Vibram® EcoStep Plus rubber with 50% recycled rubber content and Vibram traction lugs. Burton says it balances traction and durability and saves weight by removing material where it is not needed.

Waverange shell

Burton gives the Waverange a shorter backstay and a split, two-piece ankle panel, which it says allows greater articulation and side-to-side movement, and an arch reinforcement narrower than the Highshot's, which Burton credits with enhanced board feel.

Cuff Clip

A clip on the back of the boot that holds the pant cuff.

Features

  • ·DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ Lining

Strengths

  • +Three independent BOA dials set cuff, heel and instep tension separately
  • +A slit two-piece ankle panel lets the shell flex side to side
  • +A tester rated traction from the Vibram outsole excellent
  • +The heat-moldable Asym Life Liner has an asymmetric wrap cuff
  • +Comes in Regular and Wide widths, US men's 6 to 15

Best For

Riders on, or moving to, men's Step On bindings who want a soft, surfy boot with an articulating ankle and fine fit control. Three dials set the cuff, the heel hold and the instep separately, so riders who have fought heel lift or instep pressure can tune each zone. Freestyle and park-leaning riders who like board feel and side-to-side flex suit it, and riders who need a Wide can get one.

Limitations

  • −Burton's Step On boots work only with Step On bindings
  • −A tester found it very soft with little response
  • −A tester rated its flex retention poor
  • −A tester felt the Step On heel plastic hurt on hard toe-sides
  • −Testers disagreed on its length, so a try-on matters

Not For

Not for strap-binding riders: Burton states that its Step On boots pair only with Step On bindings, and the strap-binding Waverange X Pro is a different Burton boot. Not for hard carving and speed, where the tester found it very soft with little response and Burton's firm Highshot X Pro Step On fits the job. Not for riders who need the flex to hold up over seasons of hard use. Not for a sensitive heel or Achilles that cannot be tried on first. Not for riders who want one quick dial; Burton's Waverange Step On uses a single Sequence BOA. And not for pairing with a women's Step On binding, since Burton's Step On sizes are gender-specific.

Common Questions

Burton Waverange X Pro vs Highshot X Pro Step On: what is the difference?
Burton's Waverange X Pro Step On and Highshot X Pro Step On for men share the three-dial PerformFit Wrap, Asym Life Liner and Ankle Hammock. The Waverange X Pro uses a shorter backstay and a slit ankle panel, and Burton calls it a surfy mid-flex; the Highshot X Pro uses a taller backstay, a one-piece shell and a Firm Vibram outsole, and Burton calls it firm.
Burton Waverange X Pro vs Waverange X Step On: what is the difference?
The Burton Waverange X Pro Step On uses three separate BOA dials, adding a forefoot zone that tightens a liner-mounted wrap across the instep. Burton's Waverange X Step On uses Dual-Zone BOA, adjusting the upper and lower boot independently with an internal ankle hammock. Pick the X Pro if you want the instep tuned on its own dial.
What size Burton Waverange X Pro Step On should I get?
Size Burton's Waverange X Pro Step On by foot length, then try it on: reports on the 25/26 boot split between true to size, a little long and wanting a size up. This listing runs US 6 to 15, some sizes in one width only. Your binding follows the boot: S for US 6 to 8, M for 8.5 to 10.5, L for 11 to 13, XL for 14 to 15.
Is the Burton Waverange X Pro Step On good for beginners?
Burton gives the Waverange X Pro Step On no rider level; it calls the boot a surfy mid-flex and labels it Happy Medium. PTO reads it as a boot for intermediate and better riders who want fine fit control. A first-season rider can ride a soft boot, but three dials are more tuning than most new riders use; Burton's single-dial Waverange Step On is the simpler entry.
Does the Burton Waverange X Pro Step On work with strap bindings?
No. Burton says its Step On boots, the Waverange X Pro Step On included, work only with Step On bindings, and Burton sells a strap-binding Waverange X Pro as a separate boot. The Step On pairing is size- and gender-specific: Burton warns that mismatched boot and binding sizes will malfunction, and says men's and women's sizes are gender-specific for a reason. A PTO technician helps match the binding size to your boot at fitting.
Burton Waverange X Pro Step On 2027 vs 2026: what changed?
Burton's 26/27 Waverange X Pro Step On for men lists the same Tech Specs as its 25/26 boot: Triple Dial PerformFit Wrap, Asym Life Liner, Ankle Hammock, X Pro Flex Vibram outsole and DRYRIDE lining, with the same Happy Medium label. The 25/26 page shows Black and White; the 26/27 page shows Black and Dried Moss / Multi and adds a US 6.
