Description

The Burton Step On Splitboard Bindings 2027 are men's strapless splitboard bindings for men's Step On boots, built on the Spark R&D Tesla T1 machined-aluminum baseplate that Burton also uses on the Hitchhiker. Burton rates them Stiff & Aggressive, the top of its three Personality tiers, gives no flex number, and makes them in S, M and L for US men's boot sizes 6 to 13.

Toe hooks and a heel clip catch the cleats on a Step On boot, so dropping in is heel in, toes down and go. On the climb it snaps into the touring bracket, the Negative Lean Hi-Back tips back for a longer stride, and the hand-turned Step On Split Quick FLAD offers four lean settings plus a tour setting. Burton lists 1.66 kg for size M without saying whether that is one binding or the pair, so gram counters get no confirmed per-binding number. It carries the 2026 version's style number, 239151, and its Tech Specs line for line.

It suits splitboarders in men's Step On boots, or buying into them, who would rather not work straps with cold hands. It is the wrong binding for anyone in hardboots or regular strap boots: Burton pairs Step On bindings with Step On boots only and keeps the men's and women's versions apart. Strap-boot riders want the Hitchhiker. One independent review adds field notes: you need a flat patch of snow to step in, its riser bars resisted a pole at first, the wide toe can make hard-pack skinning tricky, and it runs a bit heavy for a splitboard binding.

Size it from your boot, not your weight: S takes US men's 6-8, M 8.5-10.5 and L 11-13. The baseplate runs on the Hitchhiker's pucks and touring brackets, and on a Burton splitboard with The Channel only Burton pucks fit. Burton lists no pucks in the box. When you buy, we match the binding size to your Step On boot and check your pucks and hardware. We mount bindings on boards bought from us.

Stiff & Aggressive

This is the brand’s own wording, not a number, and it does not compare across brands.

The Burton Step On Splitboard Binding is a trade: no straps at the transition, in exchange for being tied to men's Step On boots. So the decision starts with the boot, because the trade is all in how the boot is held.

One independent review, last updated April 2025, tested this Step On Split on a Burton Family Tree splitboard with Burton Photon Step On boots and said it shaves time off transitions. Its author, who has used a number of systems, hardboots included, rated it the most efficient of them and found it secure and very responsive on the way down. The same review lists the costs: stepping in takes seconds only when there is a flat spot to stand on, the riser bars were hard to flip with a pole at first, getting easier as they broke in, the wide toe could make skinning on hard pack tricky, and the binding runs a little heavy among splitboard bindings. The review does not name a model year; the baseplate and lean adjuster it describes match Burton's 2027 spec sheet.

Against the Burton Hitchhiker, decide on boots first. The Hitchhiker sits on the same Tesla T1 baseplate in the same Stiff & Aggressive tier but holds a regular snowboard boot with a Hammockstrap and a Supergrip Capstrap 2.0. Burton describes the mostly-aluminum Hitchhiker as very stiff and responsive, and calls the Step On Split, with its injection-molded body, heel cup and hi-back, more flexible and closer to conventional Burton snowboard bindings. Want that stiffer feel, or want to keep the strap boots you already tour in? The Hitchhiker is the better fit. Burton's own documents disagree on which of the two weighs more, so weight settles nothing here.

Burton suggests a more flexible Step On boot to get full use of the negative lean tour setting, and its page pairs this binding with the Waverange X Pro Step On boot and the Family Tree Hometown Hero Splitboard. The women's Step On Splitboard Binding carries the same hardware on Burton's women's chart; boots and bindings have to match by gender.

For the repair kit, Burton recommends a spare Step On heel cleat with its hardware and a few Voile straps alongside the two toe hooks it ships. Burton also reminds splitboarders that riding outside ski area boundaries carries inherent risks, such as avalanches and extreme weather, and tells them to seek proper training, the correct equipment and frequent practice.

On the board, Burton says the Tesla T1 base swaps onto existing Hitchhiker pucks with no changes, and Burton splitboards with The Channel take Burton pucks only. Before mounting, our technician checks your pucks and touring brackets against the board.

Technology

Step On connection

Toe hooks catch the toe cleats of a Step On boot and a heel clip locks its heel cleat. Burton's steps: heel in until two clicks, then press the toes down until both toe cleats lock.

Spark R&D Tesla T1 baseplate

The machined-aluminum splitboard baseplate Burton also uses on the Hitchhiker. Burton says it snaps into place to secure the binding to the split pucks or the touring bracket.

Step On Split Quick FLAD

Burton's hand-turned forward lean adjuster for this binding: four forward lean settings, plus a tour setting that gives the hi-back negative lean for climbing.

Negative Lean Hi-Back

A hi-back that Burton designed to lean back for the skin track stride and lock in place for riding.

Features

  • ·Stance indicator tool for setting stance angle
  • ·Two spare toe hooks included

Strengths

  • +Toe hooks and a heel clip replace straps at every transition.
  • +The Tesla T1 baseplate fits the Hitchhiker's pucks and touring brackets.
  • +Forward lean turns by hand: four settings plus a tour setting.
  • +Burton ships two spare toe hooks with each pair.
  • +One independent review found the descent secure and very responsive.

Best For

Splitboarders in, or buying, men's Step On boots in US sizes 6 to 13 who want strap-free transitions, including riders who already run Hitchhiker pucks and touring brackets.

Limitations

  • −Only men's Step On boots work in this binding, per Burton.
  • −One independent review found stepping in needs a flat spot.
  • −The same review found the risers hard to flip with poles.
  • −Burton prints its weights without saying per binding or per pair.
  • −Burton makes no size for US men's 14 and 15.

Not For

Anyone not riding men's Step On boots: Burton says no other boot works in it, and mixing men's and women's Step On gear can malfunction. Riders touring in regular strap boots belong on the Hitchhiker, and women in Step On boots on the women's Step On Splitboard Binding. Men's US 14 and 15, which this binding has no size for. Riders who often transition on steep, uneven ground, since one independent review says stepping in is quick only on a flat spot. Riders who want to flip the heel risers with a pole from day one, because the same review found them hard to work that way before they broke in. And gram counters who need a confirmed per-binding weight, which Burton does not give.

Common Questions

Burton Step On Splitboard vs Hitchhiker: which should I get?
The Burton Step On Splitboard Binding and the Hitchhiker share the Spark Tesla T1 baseplate and Burton's Stiff & Aggressive tier. The Step On version takes men's Step On boots only, while the Hitchhiker's straps hold regular snowboard boots. Burton calls the mostly-aluminum Hitchhiker very stiff and the Step On Split more flexible.
What size Burton Step On Splitboard Binding should I get?
Size the Burton Step On Splitboard Binding from your men's Step On boot, not your weight. Burton's chart puts S at US men's 6-8, M at 8.5-10.5 and L at 11-13, with no overlap, and the binding comes in no XL. We fit the binding to your boot size at purchase.
Will the Burton Step On Splitboard Binding fit my splitboard pucks?
Burton says the Step On Splitboard Binding uses the same pucks and touring brackets as the Hitchhiker, so a board set up for Hitchhikers needs no changes. Burton splitboards with The Channel need Burton pucks. Our technician checks your pucks, brackets and board before mounting.
Does the Burton Step On Splitboard Binding work with regular snowboard boots?
No. Burton says the Step On Splitboard Binding works only with Step On boots, and men's Step On boots must go in men's Step On bindings, since mismatched pairs can malfunction. Riders touring in strap boots should look at the Burton Hitchhiker instead.
Is the Burton Step On Splitboard Binding good for beginners?
Burton gives the Step On Splitboard Binding no level rating and says its design stays approachable to new splitboarders. Its Stiff & Aggressive tier reads, to PTO, as a descent for confident riders. One independent review also found that stepping in goes quickly only on level snow.
Burton Step On Splitboard men's vs women's: what is the difference?
Burton's men's and women's Step On Splitboard Bindings use the same Tesla T1 baseplate, hi-back and lean adjuster in the Stiff & Aggressive tier. The men's version follows Burton's men's Step On chart, US 6-13; the women's follows the women's chart, US 5-11. Burton says men's and women's Step On gear must not be mixed.
