Description

Burton's Step On Genesis EST is a men's snowboard binding that pairs strapless Step On entry with a Kickback Hammock hi-back on Burton's EST mount, which mounts on Channel boards alone. Burton rates it Happy Medium, the middle of its three Personality tiers, and publishes no flex number.

Two hooks at the toe and a clip at the heel lock a Step On boot in, and a lever on the side of the heel cup lets you out. EST attaches directly to The Channel, so no disc sits underfoot, and adds a cushioning footbed; Burton says it gives unrestricted stance options. The hi-back holds a molded hammock under spring tension that boosts response and damps vibration, per Burton, and a DialFLAD dial sets forward lean. The single-component baseplate is a 30% short-glass/nylon composite.

It suits a rider who owns a Channel board and men's Step On boots: per Burton, a Step On binding takes Step On boots alone, and men's boots go in men's bindings. On a 4x4, 2x4 or 3D insert board it is the wrong binding; for 4x4 and 2x4 boards, and 3D boards fitted with Burton's 3D Hinge Disc, Burton makes a Re:Flex Step On Genesis. Riders in strap boots should look at Burton's Genesis EST, while riders who want Burton's Stiff & Aggressive tier on EST should consider its Step On Cartel X EST instead. One independent review reports that it softens how a board feels underfoot and that stepping out takes practice, so riders who like a firm, lively board should look elsewhere.

Burton sizes it by boot: S takes US men's 6-8, M 8.5-10.5, L 11-13 and XL 14-15. We can match the binding size to your Step On boot and check that your board has The Channel. On boards bought from us, we set the Gas Pedal to your boot and mount the binding at your stance and angles.

Flex

Happy Medium

This is the brand’s own wording, not a number, and it does not compare across brands.

Burton's 26/27 page, its Tech Specs and its Step On and Step On EST manuals supply the hard facts: the EST mount, the Kickback Hammock hi-back, DialFLAD, the 30% short-glass/nylon baseplate and the Happy Medium tier. Burton does not publish a weight, a numeric flex, a hi-back rotation range or the box contents.

On-snow evidence comes from one independent review of the 2026 version: two testers, one for a day and one for a few days, in late-winter to early-spring snow. On its own scale it gave stance adjustability 5 of 5, shock absorption 4.5 of 5, comfort 4 of 5 and binding adjustability 3.5 of 5, and called the flex medium. Two riders over that one window is a narrow sample.

Against Burton's own line, the 26/27 Step On Genesis keeps the hammock, baseplate material, DialFLAD and Happy Medium tier, and moves to a Re:Flex disc with a Re:Flex FullBED. Burton lists that disc for 4x4, 2x4 and The Channel; on a 3D board, that Step On Genesis needs Burton's 3D Hinge Disc. The strap Genesis EST keeps the EST mount, hammock and tier with two straps and MicroFLAD lean, takes standard boots and comes in S, M and L only. The Step On Cartel X EST stays on EST with a 45% short-glass/nylon baseplate in Burton's Stiff & Aggressive tier, and its Tech Specs list no Kickback Hammock. The Step On Re:Flex is Happy Medium on a Re:Flex disc with no hammock listed, and its lean is set with a screwdriver.

For 26/27, Burton's Tech Specs for the Step On Genesis EST match the 25/26 version line for line. The colors went from Black and Silver to Purple Voltage, White/Dried Moss, Black and White, and the tagline was reworded, so on paper a 25/26 pair is the same binding.

Burton's chart sizes it by boot: S fits US men's 6 to 8, M 8.5 to 10.5, L 11 to 13 and XL 14 to 15, with no overlap. Burton says men's and women's Step On products must not be mixed, since mismatched pairs can malfunction. Burton's manual has the Gas Pedal set to boot size before mounting; on boards bought from us, our technician sets it and mounts the binding.

What the paperwork cannot settle is what a pair weighs, and how the binding behaves on cold, firm snow, which neither Burton's pages nor the review addresses.

Will it fit your board?

The mounting disk fits EST/Channel insert patterns.

Technology

EST mounting

Burton's disc-free mount that bolts into The Channel, with no hardware underfoot and a cushioning footbed. Burton says it improves board feel, gives unrestricted stance options and works only on Channel boards.

Kickback Hammock

Burton's suspended hi-back: a molded hammock held under internal spring tension inside the hi-back frame, which Burton says increases response and reduces vibration.

Step On connection

Burton's three-point connection: two toe hooks, one heel clip and a self-resetting release lever at the heel cup. Per Burton's manual, Step On bindings are not designed to release or to prevent injury.

DialFLAD

A dial on the hi-back that sets forward lean, tool-free per Burton's Step On EST manual. Burton says more lean gives a quicker response and less lean a more relaxed one.

Single-Component Baseplate

A baseplate made of one material throughout, here a 30% short-glass/nylon composite, which Burton says gives consistent response.

Gas Pedal

An adjustable toe ramp. Burton's Step On EST manual says to set it to your boot size with two screws under the baseplate before mounting, to cut toe drag and help the toe connection engage.

Two-position heel clip

Burton's manual gives the heel clip a first position that locks even with snow under the boot and a final riding position reached by putting additional pressure onto the heel. Burton says both hold fully; position one can allow more boot movement.

Features

  • ·Includes reground materials

Strengths

  • +EST bolts into The Channel with no disc hardware underfoot.
  • +Kickback Hammock hi-back uses spring tension to damp vibration, per Burton.
  • +DialFLAD changes forward lean with a dial, no tools needed.
  • +One independent review rated stance adjustability 5 of 5.

Best For

Riders in, or buying, men's Step On boots whose board has The Channel and who want Burton's Kickback Hammock hi-back in the Happy Medium tier, with dial-set forward lean.

Limitations

  • −Mounts only on boards with Burton's Channel, per Burton.
  • −Only men's Step On boots work in this binding, per Burton.
  • −One independent review found it makes boards feel much softer.
  • −Burton publishes no weight or numeric flex for this binding.

Not For

Anyone whose board has 4x4, 2x4 or 3D inserts: EST mounts only on The Channel. Burton's Re:Flex Step On Genesis is the version for 4x4 and 2x4 inserts; a 3D board also needs Burton's 3D Hinge Disc. Anyone without men's Step On boots: Burton says this men's Step On binding takes men's Step On boots only, and mixing men's and women's Step On products can malfunction; the strap Genesis EST takes standard boots. Riders who want Burton's Stiff & Aggressive tier on EST, who should look at the Step On Cartel X EST. And riders after a firm, lively feel underfoot, since one independent review reported a much softer board feel underfoot.

Common Questions

Burton Step On Genesis EST vs Step On Genesis: what is the difference?
The Burton Step On Genesis EST mounts with EST, which fits only boards with The Channel, while the Step On Genesis uses a Re:Flex disc that Burton lists for 4x4, 2x4 and Channel boards, plus Burton's 3D Hinge Disc for a 3D board. Burton gives both the Kickback Hammock hi-back, a 30% short-glass/nylon baseplate, DialFLAD and the Happy Medium tier.
Will the Burton Step On Genesis EST fit my board?
The Burton Step On Genesis EST mounts only on boards with The Channel, Burton's own mounting system. Boards with 4x4, 2x4 or 3D inserts cannot take it; Burton's Re:Flex Step On Genesis covers 4x4 and 2x4, and 3D with Burton's 3D Hinge Disc. We can check your board's mounting system.
Does the Burton Step On Genesis EST work with regular snowboard boots?
No. Burton says the Step On Genesis EST is compatible only with Step On boots, and men's Step On boots must go in men's Step On bindings. For standard strap boots on a Channel board, Burton's Genesis EST carries the same EST mount, Kickback Hammock and Happy Medium tier with two straps.
What size Burton Step On Genesis EST should I get?
Size the Burton Step On Genesis EST from your men's Step On boot, not your weight. Burton's chart puts S at US men's 6-8, M at 8.5-10.5, L at 11-13 and XL at 14-15, with no overlap. We match the binding to your boot when you buy.
Is the Burton Step On Genesis EST good for beginners?
The Burton Step On Genesis EST sits in Burton's middle Personality tier, Happy Medium, and PTO reads it as a fit for riders already linking turns around the mountain. Burton gives it no level rating. Newer riders get strap-free entry, though one independent review found stepping out takes some practice.
Burton Step On Genesis EST 2027 vs 2026: what changed?
The Burton Step On Genesis EST 2027 lists the same Tech Specs as the 2026 version: EST mount, 30% short-glass/nylon baseplate, Kickback Hammock, DialFLAD and Happy Medium tier. Burton changed the colors to Purple Voltage, White/Dried Moss, Black and White, and reworded the tagline.
