Description
The Burton Ion Step On is a stiff men's snowboard boot built for Step On® bindings, pairing Speed Zone™ laces with a BOA®-dialed ankle strap under Burton's Stiff & Aggressive label. Burton calls the flex firm but prints no flex number, last width or weight; this listing is the Wide shell in Black, US men's 7 to 13, which Burton's chart puts at Mondo 25 to 31.
Step On cleats, two at the toe and one at the heel, lock the boot into the binding with no straps to work, and Burton's page warns that these boots work with Step On bindings only. Speed Zone sets the upper and lower lace zones by hand. The snugger strap runs across the ankle on a BOA H4 dial. Inside sits the heat-moldable Life Liner, Ultralon foam with a DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ lining, wrapped by a Tuff Cuff Lite inner cuff. Underfoot, the Vibram® Traction Lug sole is the one Burton credits with the best traction in its line, and EST® takes out the ramp angle.
Burton writes this boot for riders who like to rip, and it suits an advanced rider who carves hard and wants Step On speed without giving up a stiff boot. Pass on it if you keep strap bindings, since the strap-binding Ion is the Ion BOA. Pass if you are still learning or want a playful park boot: one independent tester judged it too stiff for most intermediates. Think twice on a soft board, too: the second tester felt very locked in and warned its response can overpower some boards. If you want each zone on its own dial, Burton's Highshot X Pro Step On does that.
The strap Ion BOA comes in Regular width only on Burton's page, so between it and this Ion Step On, the Step On is the one sold in Wide. Bring the socks you ride in: we measure your feet, heat-mold the liner and match your Step On binding size to the boot.

Flex
Stiff & Aggressive, the stiff end of Burton's three Personality labels (Soft & Playful, Happy Medium, Stiff & Aggressive). Burton gives no flex number.
Flex ratings are the brand’s own and do not compare across brands.
Of Burton's six men's Step On boots compared here (Highshot, Highshot Plus, Highshot X, Highshot X Pro, Photon and Ion), the Burton Ion Step On alone gets Burton's Stiff & Aggressive label; the other five read Happy Medium. Against its strap twin, the Ion BOA, it keeps the Life Liner, the Tuff Cuff Lite, EST and the same stiff label, then swaps High Power Focus BOA for Speed Zone laces plus a BOA snugger strap, and the Autocant outsole for the Vibram Traction Lug that carries the cleats. Burton's Ion BOA page lists Regular only. The Step On comes in Regular and Wide, and this listing is the Wide.
The closure is the part of this boot to understand before buying. Speed Zone gives two lace zones that you set by pulling handles, not turning dials, and the snugger strap's single H4 dial stands in for the ankle strap a Step On binding doesn't have. One independent tester found speed laces a little cumbersome to fine-tune; another found the dial slow to tighten and very fast to release. By comparison the Photon Step On closes with one Sequence BOA dial and reads Happy Medium, and the Highshot X Pro Step On runs three independent BOA dials. PTO reads the Ion as the stiffer boot with the more hands-on closure.
Ride reports on the Ion come from two independent one-tester reviews. One, on a 2025 pair, rated it stiff at 9.5 on its own 10-point scale and found it held deep carves at speed, then marked it down for slow-speed turns, reduced board feel, and calf and shin bite, and traced much of the stiffness to the liner. The other rated the flex medium/stiff, heel hold excellent and traction great, and called it the most responsive Step On boot he had tried, while warning that it can overpower some boards and feels very locked in from tip to tail. He also saw forward-flex creases after a few days and expects the boot to be soft by around 100 days.
Sizing the Burton Ion Step On starts with a foot measurement, because Burton publishes no last width. One test called the Regular shell medium and tight on an E-width foot until the liner was heat-molded, and sent double-E feet to the Wide; the other found it mid-wide and true to size. The Step On system is size-specific too: Burton's men's chart puts US 6-8 in a Small binding, 8.5-10.5 in a Medium and 11-13 in a Large, and Burton warns that a mismatched pair can malfunction.
Fit
Men's US sizing, Wide width (this listing)
Burton publishes no last name, last width or volume figure for the Ion Step On. It sells the boot in Regular and Wide; this listing is the Wide.
Snowboard boots are sized by foot length, not a shell-width figure.
Closure
Speed Zone™ lacing + BOA® snugger strap
Liner
Life Liner — heat-moldable Ultralon Performance Foam® with DRYRIDE Heat Cycle™ lining
Outsole
Vibram® Traction Lug outsole with Vibram® EcoStep rubber and Step On® cleats
Technology
Step On®
A strapless boot-to-binding connection: two toe cleats at the forefoot and a heel cleat lock the boot into a Step On binding. Per Burton, a Step On boot pairs only with a Step On binding.
Speed Zone™ Lacing
Speed laces that Burton says let you customize the fit of the upper and lower zone in seconds, with more power for rebound, wrap and response.
Snugger Strap
A strap across the ankle on the outside of the shell, run by a BOA H4 dial. Burton says it adjusts stiffness and forward flex while riding and gives a loose fit on the lift between runs.
Life Liner
A heat-moldable liner of lightweight Ultralon Performance Foam that Burton describes as a cush, relaxed fit, with a DRYRIDE Heat Cycle lining that reflects body heat inward.
Tuff Cuff Lite
A taller inner cuff that Burton says holds the heel and stabilizes the ankle without limiting toe-to-heel flexibility.
Vibram® Traction Lug Outsole
Full rubber coverage in Vibram EcoStep rubber with added tread on the sides of key lugs. Burton says this outsole offers the best traction in the Burton line.
EST®
Removes the ramp angle of the outsole. Burton says this lowers your center of gravity and improves board feel, with ReBounce and B3 Gel inserts for cushioning.
Sleeping Bag Reflective Foil
A low-profile underfoot shield that Burton says reflects heat back to the feet in cold conditions.
Cuff Clips
A clip on the back of the boot that holds the pant cuff, keeping it clear of the heel cleat when you step in.
Features
- ·Vibram® EcoStep rubber
- ·New England Rope laces
Strengths
- +Two toe cleats and a heel cleat give strapless Step On entry
- +Stiff & Aggressive label, above five Happy Medium Burton Step On siblings
- +Snugger strap's BOA dial adjusts ankle hold and loosens on the lift
- +Vibram Traction Lug outsole, which Burton says has its line's best traction
- +Sold in Wide, unlike Burton's Regular-only Ion BOA
- +Heat-moldable Life Liner molded well in one independent test
Best For
Advanced to expert riders on Step On bindings who want Burton's Stiff & Aggressive boot for hard carving and fast all-mountain riding, with two hand-set lace zones, a Vibram sole and a BOA dial across the ankle, and who need the Wide shell in US men's 7 to 13.
Limitations
- −Works only with Step On bindings, per Burton
- −Speed laces set both zones; only the ankle strap has a dial
- −One independent test found reduced board feel and calf and shin bite
- −One independent test found it very locked in from tip to tail
- −Burton publishes no weight, last width, flex number or molding procedure
Not For
Not for strap bindings: Burton says Step On boots work only with Step On bindings, and the Ion BOA is the strap version. Not for beginners or most intermediates; one independent test called it too stiff for most intermediates and weak at slow speed. Not for park or surfy riders who want tip-to-tail movement, or riders on soft boards, since another test found it very locked in and able to overpower some boards. Not for riders who want every zone on a dial, not for regular-width feet buying from this Wide listing, and not for shoppers who decide on a published flex number, last width or weight.

Common Questions
- Burton Ion Step On vs Ion BOA: what is the difference?
- The Burton Ion Step On and Ion BOA share the Life Liner, Tuff Cuff Lite, EST and Burton's Stiff & Aggressive label. The Step On uses Speed Zone laces, a BOA snugger strap and a Vibram Traction Lug outsole with Step On cleats, while the Ion BOA uses High Power Focus BOA and an Autocant outsole for strap bindings. Burton sells the Step On in Wide; its Ion BOA page lists Regular only.
- Burton Ion Step On vs Photon Step On: which should I get?
- The Burton Ion Step On carries Burton's Stiff & Aggressive label, two speed-lace zones and a BOA-dialed ankle strap; the Photon Step On reads Happy Medium and closes with one Sequence BOA dial over an Imprint 3 liner and Focus Cuff. Both use the Vibram Traction Lug outsole. Pick the Ion for hard, fast riding on a stiffer board and the Photon for an easier all-mountain boot.
- What size Burton Ion Step On should I get?
- Size the Burton Ion Step On by foot length: this listing covers men's Wide sizes US 7 to 13 (Mondo 25 to 31 on Burton's conversion chart). Burton publishes no last width, and your Step On binding size has to match the boot size on Burton's chart. Bring your riding socks and we measure your feet before you pick a size.
- Is the Burton Ion Step On good for beginners?
- The Burton Ion Step On isn't a beginner boot: Burton labels it Stiff & Aggressive and writes it for riders who like to rip. One independent tester said it would be too stiff for most intermediate riders and a chore in slow-speed turns. A rider who wants a softer Step On boot than the Ion can look at Burton's Highshot Step On, which Burton calls medium-stiff and labels Happy Medium.
- Does the Burton Ion Step On work with strap bindings?
- The Burton Ion Step On does not work with strap bindings: Burton states that Step On boots are only compatible with Step On bindings, and its cleats lock into the binding's toe hooks and heel clip. Burton's Step On system is also size- and gender-specific, so a men's boot takes a men's binding in the matching size. A technician confirms the binding size against your boot when you buy.
