Description

The Burton Kids' Step On Grom is a strapless snowboard binding for small kids that connects only to Step On boots, made in a single size, M, which we match to Burton's Grom Step On boot run of 11C to 2K. It mounts with Burton's Disc system and sits at Happy Medium on Burton's Personality scale; Burton publishes no numeric flex.

Step On replaces straps and ratchets with a boot that connects straight onto the binding. Burton's own summary is no buckles, no straps, no fuss, and the brand says it designed this version with Burton employees and their kids. Burton says it built toe and heel release levers into this kids' version for added ease of use. The baseplate is an 18% short-glass/nylon composite. Burton also lists reground materials in the build and backs its baseplates with a lifetime warranty.

Burton says Step On bindings are only compatible with Step On boots, and warns that pairing boot and binding sizes that do not match will result in malfunction and could compromise safety. That makes it the wrong binding for a child in a laced or BOA boot without Step On hardware, for a family planning to move the child into non-Step On boots next season, and for a parent who wants to dial in forward lean, since Burton's page shows no hi-back specs and no adjuster.

Fit follows the boot, not the child's age or weight. Burton's size selector shows M, yet the binding's chart shows a single Large row for 3K to 7K, the row that matches Burton's Step On Smalls, so we confirm the fit on your child's actual Step On boot before you buy. Burton's page suggests the Kids' Grom Flat Top board as a partner. Burton names the Disc mount but lists no hole patterns, so we check the insert pattern and hardware on the board first, and we mount bindings on boards bought from us.

Flex

Personality label: Happy Medium (no numeric flex published)

This is the brand’s own wording, not a number, and it does not compare across brands.

Against Burton's strap Grom bindings, read the size label carefully. The Grom Disc is also sold as an M, but Burton charts that M for kids' 1K-3K, so it does not line up with the 11C-2K run. For toddler sizes, Burton's strap binding is the Mini Grom Disc in size S, charted 7C-13C. Both strap models close with Burton's Onestrap and a Smack-It ratchet and take a regular kids' boot, which keeps hand-me-downs and boot changes open. The Step On Grom gives that up, since it takes Step On boots only.

The next step up changes more than the size. The paired Grom Step On boot tops out at 2K. From 3K, Burton's next kids' Step On binding is the Step On Smalls, size L, charted 3K-7K, and it uses a Re:Flex mount instead of the Disc. A child starting in 11C has the whole run ahead; a child already in a 2K boot is at the end of it.

Technology

Step On

A boot-to-binding interface with nothing to strap: the Step On boot connects directly to the binding. Burton sums it up as no buckles, no straps, no fuss, and it pairs only with Step On boots.

Toe and heel release levers

Burton fits this kids' Step On binding with release levers at the toe and at the heel for kid-friendly use. How the levers work is not described on the Step On Grom page.

Features

  • ·Disc mounting system
  • ·Reground materials in the build

Strengths

  • +Step On entry means no straps or ratchets to work.
  • +Burton adds release levers at the toe and heel for kids.
  • +Burton backs the Step On Grom baseplate with a lifetime warranty.

Best For

Children in Burton's Grom Step On boots, sizes 11C-2K (the run we match size M to), who should be able to step in and release without an adult working straps; and families already on Step On who want the child on the same system.

Limitations

  • −The Step On Grom accepts Step On boots only.
  • −Burton's chart for the Step On Grom has no size M row.
  • −Burton lists no hi-back specs or forward-lean adjuster for it.
  • −Burton publishes no weight or numeric flex for the Step On Grom.

Not For

Kids in laced or BOA boots without Step On hardware, since Burton limits Step On bindings to Step On boots. Kids whose boots have reached 3K, where Burton's next kids' Step On size is the Step On Smalls. Families who may move the child to non-Step On boots or hand the board down to a sibling in them. Parents who want to adjust forward lean: no hi-back specs or adjuster appear on Burton's page.

Binding size follows your boot, not your weight or your height.

Common Questions

Burton Step On Grom vs Grom Disc: which should my kid ride?
The Burton Step On Grom suits a child in Burton's Grom Step On boot, because it takes Step On boots alone and carries release levers at the toe and heel. The Grom Disc uses an Onestrap with a Smack-It ratchet, takes a regular kids' boot and is charted M for 1K-3K. For strap boots in 7C-13C, Burton's size is the Mini Grom Disc S.
What size Burton Step On Grom should I get?
The Burton Step On Grom comes in one size, M, and we match it to Burton's Grom Step On boot, sold in 11C through 2K. Burton's binding chart shows only a 3K-7K row, the Step On Smalls' range, so we check the binding against your child's actual boot. Size follows the boot, never age or weight.
Is the Burton Step On Grom compatible with regular kids' snowboard boots?
The Burton Step On Grom is not compatible with regular snowboard boots: Burton says Step On bindings work only with Step On boots, and it warns against mixing either with non-Step On products. A laced or BOA kids' boot without Step On hardware needs a strap binding sized to it, such as Burton's Mini Grom Disc (7C-13C) or Grom Disc (1K-3K).
Is the Burton Step On Grom good for beginner kids?
The Burton Step On Grom fits first seasons, in our read: Burton's stated aim is snowboarding independence for even the smallest riders, with no straps, no buckles, and release levers at the toe and heel. Its Personality label is Happy Medium, and Burton lists no forward-lean adjuster.
Which snowboards does the Burton Step On Grom mount on?
The Burton Step On Grom uses a Disc mount, and Burton's page names no hole patterns or in-box hardware for it. Burton names its Kids' Grom Flat Top Snowboard as the board partner on that page. Compatibility is never assumed: before mounting it on a board bought from us, a technician checks the board's insert pattern and hardware against the disc.
