Description

The Burton Kids' Smalls Snowboard Bindings are a two-strap kids' binding on Burton's Re:Flex mount, made in one size, L, for kids' boots US 4K-7K (EU 35-40). Burton gives it a Happy Medium Personality label and publishes no numeric flex.

Burton pairs kid-specific flex with adult-grade durability: kids are hard on gear, so the Smalls uses the same proven materials and pro-grade ankle straps as Burton's adult bindings. The ankle strap is a Hammockstrap 2.0 and the toe strap a Convertible Capstrap, and both close with Smooth Glide buckles built from aluminum levers, a steel base and a polycarbonate barrel. The baseplate is Bomb-Proof Polycarbonate on the Re:Flex system, which Burton says unlocks the board's true flex and feel in ways no traditional disc binding can. A MicroFLAD lever on the hi-back sets forward lean. Burton lists reground materials in the build and backs the baseplate with a lifetime warranty.

The Smalls is the wrong binding for a child whose boot is still below 4K, and for any child in Step On boots, since this is a strap binding. Parents who shop by numbers will find gaps too: Burton publishes no weight, no numeric flex, no cushioning and no hi-back material for it.

Size follows the boot, never age or weight. Burton makes the Smalls only in L and charts it for kids' boot sizes 4K through 7K. Burton calls the Re:Flex baseplate compatible with all major snowboard mounting systems, but the page names no hole patterns, and older Burton boards with the 3D pattern, built before 2014, need a 3D Hinge Disc that does not come with the binding. We check the binding against your child's actual boot and the board's insert pattern and hardware before anything is mounted, and we mount bindings on boards bought from us.

Flex

Personality label: Happy Medium; "kid-specific flex" (no numeric flex published)

This is the brand’s own wording, not a number, and it does not compare across brands.

The Burton Smalls is where Burton's kids' strap bindings stop being one-strap bindings. Below it sit the Mini Grom Disc, size S for toddler boots 7C-13C, and the Grom Disc, size M for kids' 1K-3K. Both close with a single Onestrap and one Smack-It ratchet and bolt on with a Disc. The Smalls, size L for 4K-7K, adds a separate strap across the toe, a second ratchet and the Re:Flex mount. For a child coming off a Grom, the practical change is a second strap and ratchet to close before each run.

Readiness for two ratchets is something to plan for, not a way to choose between sizes. Burton's chart has no overlap: the Grom Disc stops at 3K and the Smalls starts at 4K, so the boot decides when a child moves up. Burton's page carries 54 owner reviews, 8 of them for the older Mission Smalls. Of the other 46, 4 say the child buckles or adjusts it without help, and 1 says the ratchet took a learning curve compared with the Mini Grom binding. Our read: a child who has only worked the Grom's one ratchet may need an adult's help with two at first.

The Burton Smalls is also the only one of the three strap bindings on Burton's kids' binding chart whose page lists a forward-lean adjuster, the MicroFLAD; neither Grom Disc page lists any adjuster. On paper it is close to a scaled-down version of Burton's adult men's Freestyle Re:Flex, which shares the Re:Flex mount, the polycarbonate baseplate, Smooth Glide buckles and MicroFLAD. The straps differ: the Freestyle uses a Reactstrap and a Supergrip Capstrap, where the Smalls uses a Hammockstrap 2.0 and a Convertible Capstrap. The Freestyle's page also adds FullBED cushioning, which the Smalls page does not list.

Growth sets how long the Burton Smalls lasts. Its chart stops at 7K, which Burton's kids' boot chart equates to men's 7 or women's 8, where adult binding sizes take over; the Freestyle's smallest size, S, covers men's 6-8. One of those 46 owner reviews, for a child in a size 7 boot, suggests moving up a binding size, so a child near the top of the run gets the binding tried on the actual boot first. A child in a 4K boot has the most of the range ahead.

The Burton Smalls is the wrong pick for a Step On family. Burton's Step On Smalls uses the same size label, L, but charts it from 3K to 7K, steps in with no straps, and Burton states Step On boots only work with Step On bindings. What Burton leaves out on the strap Smalls is weight, numeric flex and any list of discs in the box, so the board's inserts and screws get checked before it is mounted.

Technology

Re:Flex mounting system

Burton's baseplate and disc system, shared with its adult Re:Flex bindings. Burton says it gives more board flex and feel than a traditional disc binding, and says it works with every major mounting system; 3D-pattern boards need the separately sold 3D Hinge Disc.

Smooth Glide buckles

The ratchet buckles on both straps. Burton calls the system built to last, with levers made of aluminum on a steel base and a polycarbonate barrel.

MicroFLAD

A lever and sliding plate on the hi-back that sets forward lean. Burton's description: more forward lean for a quicker, more active response, less for a more relaxed one.

Features

  • ·Hammockstrap 2.0 ankle strap
  • ·Convertible Capstrap toe strap
  • ·Bomb-Proof Polycarbonate baseplate
  • ·Includes reground materials

Strengths

  • +Smooth Glide buckles use aluminum levers and a steel base.
  • +MicroFLAD lets the Smalls' hi-back forward lean be adjusted.
  • +The Smalls' baseplate carries Burton's lifetime binding warranty.
  • +Burton says the Re:Flex plate fits all major mounting systems.

Best For

Kids in strap-binding boots from US 4K to 7K (EU 35-40) who are moving up from a one-strap Grom binding, and families pairing it with Burton's Smalls BOA boot, which Burton lists it with.

Limitations

  • −The Smalls comes in one size, L, for kids' 4K-7K boots.
  • −Burton publishes no weight or numeric flex for the Smalls.
  • −Boards with Burton's 3D pattern need a separately sold disc.
  • −The Smalls asks a child to close two ratchets, not one.

Not For

Kids in Step On boots: this is a strap binding, and Burton's Step On version is the Step On Smalls. Kids whose boots are still below 4K, who belong in the Grom Disc (1K-3K) or Mini Grom Disc (7C-13C). Kids already past 7K, where the kids' chart ends. And parents who want a published weight, numeric flex or cushioning spec: Burton lists none for the Smalls.

Common Questions

Burton Smalls vs Grom Disc: what is the difference?
The Burton Smalls is a two-strap binding on a Re:Flex mount with a MicroFLAD forward-lean adjuster, sized L for kids' boots 4K-7K. The Grom Disc closes with one Onestrap and one Smack-It ratchet on a Disc mount, lists no lean adjuster and is sized M for 1K-3K. Pick by the boot size first.
What size Burton Smalls bindings should I get?
The Burton Smalls comes only in size L, which Burton's chart matches to kids' US boot sizes 4K through 7K (EU 35 to 40, UK 3 to 6, Mondo 22 to 25). Binding size is set by boot size, not by age or weight. Near the top of the range we check the binding on the child's actual boot: one owner review on Burton's page, written for a child in size 7 boots, recommends the next binding size up, without saying which size system.
Is the Burton Smalls good for beginners?
The Burton Smalls is Burton's kids' strap binding for a beginner whose boots are 4K-7K, since the one-strap Grom sizes stop at 3K, but it asks more of the child: two straps and two ratchets. Burton describes kid-specific flex for all-terrain riding and labels the Personality Happy Medium.
Burton Smalls vs Step On Smalls: which works with my child's boots?
The Burton Smalls is a strap binding for regular kids' snowboard boots in 4K-7K, such as Burton's Smalls BOA. The Step On Smalls is Burton's strapless binding with the same size label L, charted 3K-7K, and Burton states that Step On boots are only compatible with Step On bindings. A child in Step On boots goes to the Step On Smalls.
Will the Burton Smalls fit my child's board?
Burton's page says the Smalls works with all major mounting systems but names no hole patterns or in-box discs. A board drilled with Burton's pre-2014 3D pattern needs the 3D Hinge Disc, sold separately. Compatibility is never assumed: a technician checks the board's insert pattern and screws before mounting.
