Description

The Sweet Protection Switcher 2Vi Mips is an all-mountain helmet for skiers and snowboarders, built around a hybrid shell, 34 adjustable vents and a claimed weight of 560g. Sweet calls it its all-mountain benchmark, and in the 26/27 range it is priced at $300, above the Igniter 2Vi and below the Trooper 2Vi, which has a carbon shell.

Two shell builds share the job. Tough ABS hardshell covers the sides, the areas Sweet treats as exposed, lighter in-mold sections sit in less vulnerable spots, and a polycarbonate rim wraps the whole lower edge. Beneath the shell, a multi-density EPS liner carries Impact Shields front and rear, meant to spread force across a wider area. A Mips layer, which Sweet tunes to the helmet's inner geometry, allows movement inside the helmet that helps lower rotational motion in some angled impacts.

On paper the helmet holds two certifications, CE EN 1077 Class B plus ASTM F2040; Mips and the 2Vi platform add to those rather than replace them. No helmet can promise you will not be hurt; it only lowers the risk. Note that Class B, the alpine category on the EN 1077 scale, permits ear openings and covers less of the head than Class A.

A single rear dial opens or shuts all of the vents: sixteen facing forward, sixteen facing rearward and two goggle vents. OcciGrip adjusts the fit, the Fidlock magnet buckle works one-handed, the liner snaps out for cleaning, and Audio Ready accepts Sweet's sound chips, sold separately. Goggle integration is optimized for Sweet Protection goggles.

Look at the $280 Igniter 2Vi instead for a full hardshell, or the $350 Trooper 2Vi for carbon fiber; Sweet lists an internal goggle garage on both, and the Switcher's feature list does not mention one. We carry Flame Orange and Platinum Gray in SM, ML and LXL, and we are glad to help you choose a size from your head measurement.

Technology

2Vi Helmet Technology Platform

Sweet’s helmet platform, developed for each specific model and activity to put protection where it is needed with the lowest possible profile. On the Switcher it includes the multi-density liner with Impact Shields and is paired with a shaped Mips layer.

Hybrid Construction

A rugged ABS hardshell on the exposed sides and in-mold sections in less vulnerable spots, which Sweet uses to keep weight and volume down. A full-circumference polycarbonate lower edge adds durability.

Impact Shields

Elements at the front and back of the multi-density EPS liner that Sweet designs to distribute an impact from the inside over a larger area in crucial zones.

Mips

A Mips layer shaped to the helmet’s inner geometry that allows movement to help reduce rotational motion to the head in certain angled impacts. It is an add-on system, not a certification, and it reduces risk rather than guaranteeing safety.

Unique Ventilation System

34 adjustable vents, made up of 16 forward-facing, 16 rearward-facing and 2 goggle vents, all opened and closed by a single turn dial at the rear for one-hand airflow control.

OcciGrip Fit System

Sweet’s low-volume fit mechanism. On the Switcher it adjusts the width of the helmet; Sweet describes OcciGrip as adjustable on the fly in reach and height and built to stop the helmet rolling on your head.

Features

  • ·34 adjustable vents controlled by one rear turn dial
  • ·Fidlock magnetic buckle for one-hand, glove-friendly closing
  • ·New snap-in liner that pops out for cleaning and quick drying
  • ·Goggle fit and goggle vents tuned for Sweet Protection goggles
  • ·Audio Ready system (sound chips sold separately)
  • ·Fitpads included for fine-tuning the fit

Sweet Protection’s Switcher 2Vi Mips is the 26/27 rebuild of Sweet’s all-mountain Switcher, pitched as one helmet for every kind of mountain day for skiers and snowboarders. Against the outgoing Switcher Mips it drops from 600g to a claimed 560g and goes from 22 adjustable vents to 34. At $300 it sits between the $280 Igniter 2Vi and the $350 Trooper 2Vi with its carbon shell, and on Sweet’s claimed weights it is the lightest of those three.

The Switcher 2Vi’s shell is a hybrid, and that explains both its weight and its trade-off. Sweet puts a rugged ABS hardshell on the sides, the more exposed areas, and uses in-mold construction in less vulnerable spots to cut weight and volume; a full-circumference polycarbonate lower edge adds durability. Inside sits a multi-density EPS liner with Impact Shields at the front and back, which Sweet designs to spread an impact over a larger area in crucial zones. The Igniter 2Vi, by contrast, wraps its whole outer in a variable-elasticity polycarbonate hardshell. Sweet lists 560g without saying which size it weighed, and gives no size basis for the Igniter or Trooper figures either.

Certification on the Switcher 2Vi Mips is CE EN 1077 Class B and ASTM F2040. Its Mips layer is an add-on, shaped to the helmet’s inner geometry, that allows movement to help reduce rotational motion to the head in certain angled impacts, and 2Vi is Sweet’s helmet technology platform. Neither one is a certification, and no helmet guarantees safety; it reduces risk. Class B is the alpine class that allows ear openings and less coverage than Class A.

Ventilation is where the Switcher 2Vi earns its spot in the line. The 34 vents break down as 16 forward-facing, 16 rearward-facing and 2 goggle vents, and one turn dial at the rear opens or closes them, so you can change airflow one-handed as conditions change. The Igniter lists adjustable ventilation plus 10 penetration-proof ports. The Switcher’s goggle fit is tuned for Sweet’s own goggles, and Sweet’s guide says Firewall, Interstellar and Clockwork MAX fit from M/L up while Clockwork fits S/M to M/L. OcciGrip handles fit, a Fidlock magnetic buckle closes with gloves on, the new snap-in liner pops out for easy cleaning and quick drying, and Audio Ready takes sound chips sold separately.

The real choice is the Switcher 2Vi against the Igniter 2Vi. The Switcher costs $20 more, claims less weight at 560g against 640g, and puts all 34 vents on one rear dial. The Igniter keeps a full polycarbonate hardshell, adds an internal goggle garage and a hook goggle retainer, and uses Sweet’s 2-Layer Mips. Pick the Switcher if airflow control and low weight matter most on long resort days; pick the Igniter if you want the full hardshell and the goggle garage. The Trooper 2Vi is the step up for a carbon-fiber mono-shell, at 700g.

Safety — read this

A helmet reduces the risk of injury; it does not prevent injury or guarantee safety. Mips is an add-on system and 2Vi is Sweet’s helmet technology platform, not certifications — the Switcher 2Vi’s certification is CE EN 1077 Class B and ASTM F2040. EN 1077 Class B is the alpine class that permits ear openings and less coverage than Class A.

Strengths

  • +Claimed 560g, against 640g for Igniter 2Vi and 700g for Trooper 2Vi
  • +34 adjustable vents controlled by one rear turn dial
  • +Hybrid shell: ABS hardshell sides, in-mold sections to save weight
  • +Impact Shields front and back in a multi-density EPS liner
  • +Fidlock magnetic buckle and a snap-in, quick-drying liner

Best For

All-mountain skiers and snowboarders who want a light helmet with lots of dial-adjustable venting for changing conditions.

Limitations

  • −In-mold sections, not a full hardshell like the Igniter 2Vi
  • −Sweet does not list a goggle garage on the Switcher 2Vi
  • −EN 1077 Class B allows ear openings, less coverage than Class A
  • −Sweet does not publish which size the 560g is weighed at
  • −Costs $20 more than the Igniter 2Vi

Not For

Buyers who want a full hardshell outer (the Igniter 2Vi), a carbon-fiber shell (the Trooper 2Vi), an internal goggle garage (Sweet lists one on those two, not on the Switcher), EN 1077 Class A coverage, or an FIS race helmet with a chin guard.

Common Questions

What certifications does the Switcher 2Vi Mips meet?
The Switcher 2Vi Mips from Sweet Protection is certified to CE EN 1077 Class B and ASTM F2040. Mips and 2Vi are systems built into the helmet, not certifications. EN 1077 Class B is the alpine class that allows ear openings and less coverage than Class A.
Switcher 2Vi or Igniter 2Vi — what’s the difference?
Both carry CE EN 1077 Class B and ASTM F2040. The Switcher 2Vi ($300, 560g) uses a hybrid ABS and in-mold shell with 34 vents on one rear dial. The Igniter 2Vi costs $280, weighs 640g and uses a full polycarbonate hardshell with adjustable ventilation plus 10 ports, an internal goggle garage and 2-Layer Mips.
What changed from the previous Switcher Mips?
Sweet lists the new Switcher 2Vi Mips at 560g with 34 adjustable vents, against 600g and 22 vents for the previous Switcher Mips. It moves onto Sweet’s 2Vi platform, keeps the hybrid construction and Impact Shields, and Sweet describes its snap-in liner as new.
How much does the Switcher 2Vi Mips weigh?
Sweet lists the Switcher 2Vi Mips at 560g but does not say which size was weighed. For reference, Sweet lists the Igniter 2Vi at 640g and the Trooper 2Vi, with its carbon shell, at 700g.
What sizes does the Switcher 2Vi Mips come in?
Sweet makes the Switcher 2Vi in SM, ML, LXL and XXL, with XXL offered in Dirt Black and Gloss White only. Sweet recommends measuring your head with a soft tape just above the ears and eyebrows, level from front to back.
Which goggles fit the Switcher 2Vi Mips?
Sweet tunes the Switcher’s goggle fit and goggle vents for its own goggles. Sweet’s guide says Firewall, Interstellar and Clockwork MAX fit helmets from M/L up, and Clockwork fits S/M to M/L. Sweet does not characterize fit with other brands’ goggles.
