Description

Salomon's women's S/Pro Alpha 80, sold as the Alpha 80 W, is an alpine ski boot for intermediate skiers, built on Salomon's Alpha last. Salomon gives it a 98 mm last and an 80 flex rated Soft, lists 3 lb 9 oz per boot, and PTO stocks Mondopoint 22/22.5 to 25/25.5.

Salomon thins the polyurethane across the instep and moves the second buckle, and the instep buckle has three positions, so a skier who gets pressure across the instep has room to set it. The lower buckle sits on a tool-free tooth rack for lower-leg volume, and the cuff carries a calf adjuster that adds 11 mm of perimeter and 4 mm of height. The liner, Salomon's My Custom Fit 3D Sport, comes pre-shaped at the ankle and can be heat-molded, and a 35 mm Velcro strap closes the top.

It suits a slim-to-average foot and an intermediate who wants a forgiving boot on groomers and all-mountain resort days. Wide feet belong in Salomon's Delta boots, and a foot that needs more room across the forefoot is better served by Salomon's Supra S BOA 95, on a 100 mm last. Stronger or faster skiers will push past a Soft 80; Salomon rates the Alpha 90 W Medium. Retailers count four buckles and no BOA dial, and no walk mode is listed, so treat it as a lift-served boot.

The boot comes with GripWalk ISO 23223 pads. Have a technician confirm your binding is certified for GripWalk before the boots go into it.

At PTO we measure your foot, shell-check it with the liner out, and check the boots against your bindings.

Last Width

98mm— Narrow (96–99mm)

Salomon's S/Pro Alpha 80 W sits below the Alpha 90 W in Salomon's women's Alpha boots, on a 98 mm last. Salomon rates it 80 flex, class Soft, level Intermediate, and files it under All-Mountain. PTO's read: this boot is easiest to judge against two neighbors, the Alpha 90 W from the same Alpha generation on the same 98 mm, and the BOA-closed Alpha C boots in Salomon's 26/27 worksheet.

Start with the width label. Salomon's page labels it Medium, yet Salomon labels the same 98 mm figure Narrow on its current Alpha C BOA 95, and retailers call the boot narrow. PTO's boot chart puts 98 mm in the narrow band, which is why this page shows it there. No reference size is published for the 98 mm, so we size it on your foot. Trust the millimeter figure over either word.

Against the Alpha 90 W, Salomon's own figures separate them mainly on stiffness. Both sit on the 98 mm last with a three-position instep buckle, both carry the Intermediate level label, and Salomon gives each the same 3 lb 9 oz per boot. So neither the level label nor the scale picks between them; the flex class does, Soft on the 80 and Medium on the 90. Salomon's listings also differ on hardware: screwed aluminum buckles throughout the 90, riveted ones on the 80 apart from its screwed instep buckle. That 80 is Salomon's own number and does not line up cleanly with another brand's 80, and one retailer goes as low as beginner-intermediate for it.

Next season is the other comparison. Salomon's 26/27 dealer worksheet has no Alpha 80 W row; its women's Alpha boots there start at the Alpha C BOA 85 W, and all four women's Alpha rows on that sheet (115, 105, 95 and 85 W) carry BOA in the name. The Alpha C BOA 95, also on a 98 mm last, pairs BOA with two screwable buckles, lists Custom Shell HD and weighs 3 lb 11 oz.

Shell molding is the open question. Salomon calls the liner heat-moldable. Whether the shell molds is unconfirmed: a retailer says it can be heat-molded to about 104 mm in the forefoot, but the Salomon Alpha 80 specs we could read do not mention Custom Shell HD. Salomon does list Custom Shell HD on the Alpha C BOA 95, so a skier who already expects shell work at 98 mm has a Salomon-listed option there. Treat shell work on this boot as a bootfitter's call.

The pads are premounted GripWalk ISO 23223, and no walk mode is listed. GripWalk soles need a binding certified for them. A technician confirms yours, then sets and tests the release.

Our order at fitting: shell-check the 98 mm with the liner out, then choose the Soft 80 or the Medium 90 by how hard you ski, then weigh this boot's buckles against BOA on Salomon's 26/27 Alpha C boots.

Strengths

  • +3D instep shell thins the plastic over the instep
  • +Three-position instep buckle tunes pressure across the top of the foot
  • +Heat-moldable My Custom Fit 3D Sport liner, pre-shaped at the ankle
  • +Calf adjuster adds 11 mm perimeter and 4 mm height
  • +GripWalk ISO 23223 pads come premounted for walking grip

Best For

Intermediate women with a slim-to-average foot who ski groomers and all-mountain resort terrain, want a forgiving Soft 80 flex, feel pressure across the instep in other boots, and run GripWalk-certified bindings.

Limitations

  • −Soft 80 flex runs out of support for strong skiers
  • −One 98 mm width; wide feet need Salomon's Delta boots
  • −No BOA dial: four buckles do the closing
  • −No walk mode listed, so plan on lift-served days
  • −GripWalk pads need GripWalk-certified bindings, checked by a technician

Not For

Wide feet, which belong in Salomon's Delta boots (the Delta BOA 95 is a 102/108 last). Average-width feet that want more room than 98 mm, which belong in the 100 mm Supra S BOA 95. Strong, fast or heavier skiers who fold a Soft 80; the Alpha 90 W is rated Medium. Anyone who wants a BOA dial, since this boot closes with four buckles. Anyone who wants to skin uphill or tour, since no walk mode is listed. And anyone whose bindings are not certified for GripWalk soles; a technician checks certification at fitting.

Common Questions

Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W vs S/Pro Alpha 90 W: what is the difference?
Salomon's S/Pro Alpha 80 W and Alpha 90 W share the 98 mm Alpha last and a three-position instep buckle. The headline difference is flex: Salomon rates the 80 Soft and the 90 Medium, and lists riveted aluminum buckles on the 80, with a screwed instep buckle, against screwed buckles on the 90. Stronger or faster intermediates who fold the 80 should try the 90.
What size Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W should I get?
PTO stocks Salomon's S/Pro Alpha 80 W in Mondopoint 22/22.5 through 25/25.5, on a 98 mm last. Salomon publishes no reference size for that width and no per-size fit data, so we size it by measuring your foot and checking the shell with the liner out.
Is the Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W good for beginners?
Salomon aims the S/Pro Alpha 80 W at intermediate skiers and rates its 80 flex Soft; one retailer lists it as beginner-intermediate. A skier who is already strong or heavy may find the Soft 80 short on support; the Alpha 90 W is the stiffer step in the same last.
Is the Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W good for wide or narrow feet?
Salomon's S/Pro Alpha 80 W uses a 98 mm last, which Salomon labels Medium and retailers call narrow, so it suits slim-to-average feet. Salomon's Supra S BOA 95 sits on a 100 mm last for an average foot that wants more room, and its Delta boots, such as the Delta BOA 95 on 102/108, are the wide option.
Is the Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W heat-moldable?
Salomon calls the S/Pro Alpha 80 W's My Custom Fit 3D Sport liner heat-moldable. Shell molding is unconfirmed: one retailer says heat-molding can take the shell's forefoot to about 104 mm, and the Alpha 80 text PTO could read from Salomon does not mention Custom Shell HD. Shell work is a decision for the bootfitter at fitting.
What bindings work with the Salomon S/Pro Alpha 80 W?
Salomon's S/Pro Alpha 80 W comes with premounted GripWalk ISO 23223 pads, so it needs a binding certified for GripWalk soles. A certified technician confirms your binding against the sole at fitting, then sets and tests the release.
