Hestra Fall Line 3-finger

Hestra builds the outer from impregnated cowhide, a leather it says is "widely used for many of our ski gloves" and calls "a durable leather with good impregnation properties." The palm is sewn with outseams, so its seams sit on the outside of the glove.

The lining is a removable 5-finger Bemberg/polyester liner that carries its own G-Loft insulation. The liner has its own replacement style number (34420). The neoprene cuff closes with Velcro. Handcuffs, or wrist leashes, keep the glove on your wrist when your hand is out. There's also a carabiner.

A 3-finger keeps the index finger free while the middle, ring and little fingers share one compartment and their heat. Because the lining is 5-finger, each finger still has its own sleeve inside. Foam and fiberfill in the shell and G-Loft in the lining make two layers of insulation. That puts it between a mitt and a five-finger glove on both finger movement and shared warmth.

Hestra says cowhide "resists moisture and abrasion well."

Hestra sizes it by number. Black and Cork are each offered in sizes 6 to 11.

It suits skiers who want a free index finger while the other three fingers keep sharing warmth. Its collection is Alpine Pro, which Hestra says freeriders, mountain guides and ski instructors use.

To split all five fingers in the shell too, pick the five-finger Fall Line. For all four fingers in one compartment, there's the Fall Line Mitt. For a women's fit, the Women's Fall Line comes as a five-finger glove and the Women's Fall Line Mitt as a mitt.
