Hestra Army Leather Patrol Gauntlet

Army Leather is Hestra's specially treated goat leather. Hestra says it was "originally used to make gloves for military purposes" and that it "withstands tough, outdoor conditions." The Dobby Polyester Melange fabric next to it is windproof and breathable.

The Bemberg/polyester lining comes out, and Hestra lists the replacement liner as style 34070. The snow lock is an inner cuff that closes around your wrist, underneath the gauntlet. Elastic at the wrist keeps the fit close, and a puller at the cuff gives you a tab to grab when you pull the glove on. Handcuffs are wrist leashes, so the glove stays on your wrist when your hand is out of it. Hestra also lists a carabiner, a hanging loop on the finger for hanging the glove up, and reinforcement details.

G-Loft insulation and the lining provide the warmth. Each of the five fingers has its own space. The trade-off is physical: fingers that sit apart can't share heat the way they do in a mitt.

The wrist gets two layers of cover. The snow lock closes on the inside and the gauntlet goes over your sleeve. The fabric blocks wind and breathes, and Hestra says the leather's structural properties provide "effective protection against moisture."

This unisex glove is offered in Hestra's numeric sizes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, and Navy, Charcoal and Olive each come in all six. If you fall between two sizes, try both.

Hestra puts it in its Alpine Pro collection, the gloves it says are used by freeriders, mountain guides and ski instructors. Choose it if you want Army Leather, five fingers and a gauntlet with a snow lock.

If your hands run cold, the Hestra Army Leather Patrol Gauntlet Mitt keeps the gauntlet and snow lock but puts your fingers together, and it adds a Velcro wrist strap.
