PTO Verdict
“A teenager's Camox at 90 mm underfoot: light, double-rockered and easy to turn, with no metal in the listed materials to damp it at speed.”
Best for: Teenagers in Black Crows' 14-18 range who handle the whole resort in control and want one ski for groomers, bumps, trees and soft snow. It suits lighter teenage skiers who have outgrown a kids' ski and want a 90 mm Camox shape at 1200-1450 g per ski, including kids moving up from the Junius Birdie.
Not for: Teens still learning to link turns on green runs: retailers rate it Intermediate-Advanced; a softer, narrower ski makes learning easier. Kids who need a ski shorter than 139.3 cm: the Junius Birdie runs from 101.1 to 141.1 cm. Tall teens who need more than 164.2 cm: the Camox Jr goes to 171.1 cm. Fast, heavy teens who want metal-laminate damping on ice: Black Crows lists no metal and calls the flex tolerant. Groomer-only skiers chasing quick, short carved turns: a narrower carving ski changes edges faster.

Description
Black Crows' Camox Birdie Jr is a junior all-mountain ski for teens aged 14 to 18 who already ski the whole mountain and have outgrown a kids' ski. Its waist is 90 mm at every length, it turns on a 16 m radius at 139.3 and 149.3 and 17 m at 157.3 and 164.2, and it is made in four lengths from 139.3 to 164.2 cm.
Under the salmon topsheet is a poplar and fiberglass core in a semi-cap build, with ABS sidewalls all the way around and no metal in the listed materials. That keeps it light for a 90 mm ski: 1200 g per ski at 139.3 cm and 1450 g at 164.2 cm. Black Crows pairs a classic medium camber underfoot with rocker in the tip and tail, and calls the flex tolerant. On snow that adds up to a ski a teen can pivot and release in bumps and trees, hold an edge on the groomer, and actually bend into a turn without adult weight behind it.
It is the wrong ski for a teen still linking turns on green runs. Retailers list it as Intermediate-Advanced, and a narrower, softer ski is easier to learn on. It is also the wrong ski for a fast, heavy teen who wants a damp, locked-down ski on ice; with no metal and a tolerant flex, our read is that it gives up damping at speed to stay easy to turn. A kid who only skis groomers and wants quick edge-to-edge carving will get that from a narrower ski.
The Camox Jr has matching published specs in another colorway and adds a 171.1 cm length. Younger kids belong on the Junius Birdie, made for ages 7 to 13. The Camox Birdie Jr comes flat. We mount a binding whose brake fits the 90 mm waist at Black Crows' -6 cm mark, set release values at fitting, and help choose the length from height, weight and ability.

The take
“A teenager's Camox at 90 mm underfoot: light, double-rockered and easy to turn, with no metal in the listed materials to damp it at speed.”
The Camox Birdie Jr is the light, easy-turning teen Camox at 90 mm. Black Crows' 26/27 workbook settles the shape, radius and weight of all four lengths. What it cannot settle is how much support the ski gives a heavy, fast teen at speed, so for that skier the length chosen at fitting carries more of the decision than anything on paper.
Against the Camox Jr, there is little to choose on paper. Black Crows' workbook publishes the same dimensions, radius and weight at the four shared lengths, and the same poplar and fiberglass core, double rocker and -6 cm mount. Black Crows does not say whether the two are built differently; their published specs match apart from length, colorway and the website's radius printing. The Camox Jr adds a 171.1 cm length, so a tall teen may need it.
Below the Camox Birdie Jr sits the Junius Birdie, Black Crows' 7-13 ski, 76-86 mm underfoot depending on length, from 101.1 to 141.1 cm. Above it, the adult Captis Birdie keeps a 90 mm waist and the same listed core materials in lengths from 154.4 to 172.1 cm.
Sizing the Camox Birdie Jr is a choice between 139.3, 149.3, 157.3 and 164.2 cm. One retailer says it runs true to size, with a shorter length for agile skiers and a longer one for confident or fast-growing teens. We set the final length at fitting from height, weight, ability and how fast the skier is still growing.
Bindings we'd pair with it
Mount point: Black Crows recommends -6 cm. The ski is sold flat, and a PTO technician mounts the binding in the shop. Our pick: A binding whose brake clears the 90 mm waist, checked against the skier's boots.
- Binding fitted at PTOFlat-ski setup
This is a flat ski. We choose a binding whose brake clears the 90 mm waist, mount it at Black Crows' mark and set release values at fitting.
Release values are set by a technician to the skier's boot, weight and ability. Boot-sole compatibility is checked against the actual boots at fitting, never assumed.

- Is the Black Crows Camox Birdie Jr good for beginners?
