Union sells the STR as the affordable way into its Camber Disk chassis — the binding to level up on — and its own scorecard keeps that honest: all-mountain 7, performance 6, freestyle 5, freeride 6. Those are the numbers of a competent entry all-rounder, not a specialist that leads at anything. The flex reads 5 of 10 on Union's scale, mid-soft and forgiving rather than stiff and demanding. Union's own Product Description aims it at beginner-to-intermediate riders, and the spec sheet backs that up.
The easy feel is built into the parts. The baseplate and highback are Union's entry-level S5 and S11 Duraflex nylon — a softer, more forgiving flex than the Force's high-fiberglass Duraflex ST, so the STR is easier to press and more comfortable while you are still building skills. A canted, thermoformed EVA footbed angles your feet into a natural stance and cushions landings, and the full-size Camber Disk keeps more of the baseplate on the board than a Mini Disk for a planted, stable feel. Canting is built in; setup runs on the Cam-Lock lean adjuster and Quick-Lock straps.
Be clear about where the money went. The STR runs lighter-duty componentry than the Force: S5 Duraflex instead of Duraflex ST, Aluminum S2 ratchets instead of Magnesium, Exoframe straps and EXT thermoformed EVA cushioning instead of the Molecular Bushing suspension. Its 1.82 kg per pair is lighter than the Force's 2.20, but that reflects lighter parts, not a performance weight-save. If you ride hard and want more drive and damping, the Force is the step up — flex 7, Union 9/10 all-mountain, at $349.95. If you charge fall-line, Union rates the Falcor 10/10 freeride on a lighter Mini Disk (1.80 kg per pair) against the STR's 6/10. And dedicated park riders will want the softer, surfier Mini Disk Strata over the STR's 5/10 freestyle.
Two things to settle before you order. Mounting: the Camber Disk fits 4x2, 4x4 and Burton Channel boards, but not Burton's old 3D three-hole pattern — on a 3D board it will not physically mount. Sizing: choose by your boot, not your weight, and note the STR stops at L, with no XL, while all three colorways (Black, Gray, Purple) run the same S–M–L. We have not ridden the 26/27 STR ourselves; this is read off Union's catalog, and everything here is Union's own published spec.

Technology
Camber Disk
Union's full-size mounting disk, compatible with 4x2, 4x4 and Burton Channel boards. The larger footprint keeps more of the baseplate in contact with the board than a Mini Disk does, which gives the STR a planted, stable all-mountain feel.
S5 / S11 Duraflex chassis
Union's entry-level Duraflex nylon in the baseplate (S5) and highback (S11). It flexes softer and more forgiving than the Force's high-fiberglass Duraflex ST — easier to press while you build skills, at a lower price. It drives the board; it is not a safety device.
Canting footbed + Thermoformed EVA cushioning
A canted, thermoformed EVA footbed angles your feet toward a natural knee-in stance, and an EXT thermoformed EVA bushing cushions impact — the source of the all-day comfort Union markets on this binding.
Exoframe 3.0 ankle strap
Union's molded ankle strap. It wraps the boot for support and heel hold, paired with Quick-Lock strap adjustment. A fit-and-response feature, not a safety device.

- Does the STR have a release like a ski binding?
- No. A snowboard binding has no DIN and no release mechanism — it holds your boot to the board. Its specs describe feel and response, not protection.
