Union calls the Cadet the standard for youth snowboard bindings, and its own scorecard says something more useful than the slogan: all-mountain 6, freeride 4, and its highest mark a freestyle 7. Read together, those are the numbers of a soft, playful learner's binding, not a stiff one built to drive a board. The flex sits at 4 of 10 on Union's scale, and that is the point — a kid moving from wobbly first turns to first jumps wants forgiveness, not response.
That soft feel is built, not just labeled. Base-grade S8 and Cadet Duraflex nylon in the baseplate and highback keep the chassis light and forgiving, which is where the flex and the 1.47 kg a pair come from. Union then puts real metal where a budget kids binding uses plastic: an Extruded 3D Aluminum heelcup and high-grade steel hardware, so it takes a beating and gets handed down. The steel-screw straps are the growing-feet feature — you lengthen them as the foot grows, stretching how long one pair lasts. None of this is a safety device; a snowboard binding has no release and only anchors the boot to the deck, so the specs describe fit and feel, not protection.
Where it sits in Union's kids line matters more than the badge. Below it, the single-strap Cadet One is a lighter 0.82 kg option for the youngest feet, before a boot fills out the Cadet's smallest size. Above it, the Ranger steps up on a Mini Disk at 1.70 kg a pair — more binding for a bigger or keener kid who wants the drive the soft Cadet trades away. Once a boot grows past the Cadet's M, the adult Flite Pro carries the same disk forward. The Cadet is the middle-of-that-ladder choice: soft, forgiving, made to build confidence.
Two things to settle before you order. Mounting is the easy part: the Universal V2 Disk fits 4x2, 4x4, Burton Channel and Burton's older 3D pattern, so there is no current kids board it will not bolt to. Sizing is the part to get right, because it follows the child's boot, never their age; the Cadet comes in S and M, both in Black and Green. If the boot is smaller than the S, the Cadet One is the answer; past the M, it is time for an adult binding. We have not ridden the 26/27 Cadet — this is a read of Union's catalog and price sheet — but it is Union's own published spec throughout.

Technology
Universal V2 Disk
Union's mounting disk, and the only one in their line that adds Burton's old 3D three-hole pattern on top of 4x2, 4x4 and Channel. In practice it fits every current kids board, including older Burton 3D decks that Union's own Camber Disk and Mini Disk bindings cannot fit — there is no board it locks out.
Adjustable for Growing Feet (steel-screw strap adjust)
The ankle and toe straps are set with steel screws, so their length can be extended as the child's foot grows. It stretches how many seasons one pair fits — a fit feature, not a performance one.
S8 / Cadet Duraflex base-grade nylon
Base-grade Duraflex nylon in the baseplate and highback, without added fiberglass. It keeps the chassis soft, light and forgiving, which is where the flex-4 feel and the low weight come from — confidence-building rather than responsive.
Extruded 3D Aluminum heelcup + Grade 8.8 steel hardware
A real aluminum heelcup and high-grade steel hardware rather than all plastic. Metal in the load-bearing heelcup gives it more durability than an all-plastic entry binding, so it survives being handed down. It is a construction choice, not a safety device.

Best For
Kids learning or progressing across the whole hill whose boot lands in the S or M range, who want a soft, forgiving ride over a stiff, demanding one — on any board, since the Universal V2 Disk mounts every insert pattern.
Limitations

Not For
Kids whose boots fall outside S and M — smaller feet need the single-strap Cadet One, and a boot past the M moves to an adult binding, since the wrong size will not hold the boot. Advanced young riders who want a stiff, responsive, driving binding: at flex 4 with Union freeride 4 this is a soft progression binding, and a stiffer one drives a board harder. And anyone after a step-in or rear-entry system — the Cadet is a conventional ankle-and-toe-strap binding.

- Both ride the Universal V2 Disk, but the Cadet One is Union's smallest binding — a single-strap design at 0.82 kg a pair for boots too small for the Cadet's S. The two-strap Cadet, at 1.47 kg a pair, is the step up once a boot fits its size S or M.
- Will the Union Cadet fit my child's board?

- Does the Cadet have a release like a ski binding?
- No. A snowboard binding has no DIN and no release — it holds the boot to the board. Its specs describe fit, feel and adjustability, not protection, and nothing here prevents injury.
