Union sells the Atlas Step On on speed — fast in, fast out — and the mechanism is exactly that: a strapless step-in binding. You drop your boot onto the baseplate and cleats at the toe and heel snap it shut — no ankle strap, no toe strap, nothing to ratchet from a seated position. Union scores it a 9 for all-mountain, with freestyle, freeride and performance all sitting at 7, and reads the flex a medium 6 on its own scale. But the whole thing rests on one condition, and it is the single most important fact on this page: a Step On binding works only with Burton Step On compatible boots. Ordinary strap boots physically will not lock in.
The convenience is built on an S1 Step On Duraflex CB chassis — a carbon-infused baseplate and matching highback that keep the medium flex responsive while housing the Step On engagement hardware. An adjustable Gas Pedal and an integrated two-stage forward-lean adjuster tune toe leverage and highback angle, and a Hi-Flex EVA bushing on a non-stick footbed damps chatter and sheds snow underfoot. None of this is a safety system: the Step On is about the speed and feel of getting in and out. It does not release in a fall and protects nothing.
Inside Union's line the Step On is the convenience pick, not the specialist. If you want boot freedom and more outright drive, the strap Atlas takes any snowboard boot, runs a stiffer flex 8 with canting and adds 4x4 mounting — the trade is that you buckle straps every run. Riders chasing dedicated freeride charging are better served by the Falcor, which Union rates 10/10 freeride against this binding's 7. The women's version is the Astra Step On, a lighter chassis at 1.60 kg a pair on the same 4x2 and Channel fit.
Two things decide whether it suits your setup. First, boots: if you do not already own Burton Step On boots, this binding commits you to buying them too, so the strap Atlas is the smarter call for most riders. Second, mounting: the Step On disks take 4x2 insert boards and the Burton Channel only, not the 4x4 pattern — narrower than the strap Atlas, so check your deck. Size follows your boot rather than your weight, and it runs S through XL, though Union does not publish the boot-size range for each size on this model. We have not ridden the 26/27 Atlas Step On; this is a read of Union's own catalog spec.

Step On Instant Connection System
A strapless step-in interface: the boot drops onto the binding and clicks into cleats at the toe and heel, with no ankle or toe strap to buckle. Fast in, fast out — you step in standing up. The trade is that it works only with Burton Step On compatible boots; it is a boot-and-binding system, not a universal binding, and not a safety device.
S1 Step On Duraflex CB chassis
A carbon-infused Duraflex CB baseplate and matching S1 Step On highback. It keeps the medium (flex 6) chassis responsive but forgiving while it houses the Step On heel and toe engagement hardware and still transfers edge power.
Adjustable Gas Pedal + Integrated 2-Stage FLAD
An adjustable toe ramp plus a built-in two-stage forward-lean adjuster on the highback. It lets you tune toe-side leverage and how upright or forward the highback sits — a fit-and-feel adjustment, not a performance claim.
Hi-Flex HP EVA bushing + Non-Stick HP EVA footbed
A softer EVA bushing under the baseplate on a non-stick EVA footbed. It soaks up chatter and sheds snow build-up underfoot for a smoother, less fatiguing ride — a comfort effect, not a safety one.
